47 Ancient Scrolls, Maps, and Handouts to Spice up Your Game Night

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $2.00

As the faint candle-light flickers about the walls of the underground chamber, your eyes are drawn to an old piece of parchment lying on a table in the corner of the room. A century of dust and debris covers the parchment, but you can just make out the outlines of – something – drawn or written upon it. What do your characters do?

Perhaps more importantly, what do you, as the DM/GM do? You can either tell your players what’s on the parchment, or you can show them. With 47 Ancient Scrolls, Maps, and Handouts, we’ve done most of the work for you. Within these pages, you will find a literal treasure-trove of RPG handouts containing many parchment templates - some are blank, while others are bear wax seals, are torn and weathered, water or blood-stained, or decorated with unique borders or runic symbols. Additionally, this product contains several maps you can use in your games!

All maps, scrolls, and handouts are enclosed as attachments to the .pdf.

We hope you enjoy!

I came here to ask why the PDF only had two pages, then I read the bit below about the images are attachments in the PDF. So, that's weird. So, I thought I would leave a comment to that other people would see it first thing. :)

You might just add a zip file with the JPG files in it. Save everybody some time. ;)

Hello,

Great resources however I am attempting to write them out in word and if I format text then most lose their wax seal and the others jump around the page and then do not allow me to write on them.

Am I missing something?

Just bought this product as it filled a need for this weekends adventure. Well worth the price!

I do have one suggestion: Several of the documents have wax seals on them, but they are part of the main image rather than a separate graphical element. It would be ideal if they could be moved/resized.

What is the license on this? I bought this, but need to know if I can use the parchment backgrounds in commercial works like an adventure. Thank you!

There's no indication that this is for any use beyond gamemasters; it's not filed under Publisher Resources, no notes on commercial use, and no license. So, unless/until the publisher changes the terms, always assume it's for personal use only. There are dozens of other publishers who offer stock art page backgrounds and the like, many of them free or at least cheap.

How does one access the attached images? When I open the downloaded PDF it only shows me 2 pages of introductory text. Is there some sort of separate file? (I'm working using Preview on a Macbook, if that has anything to do with it).

Hey Isaac M,

They are enclosed as attachments to the .pdf file; simply look for the little paper clip on the left-hand side and you should be good. Let me know if you have any issues.

Regards,

Ron

I was able to extract them with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

A note that might be worth making is that Acrobat is the only PDF viewing program that can interact with attachments, so anyone using Preview (like I was) won't be able to access the attachments until they use Acrobat.

Lisa W. I will certainly do that, as long as you are patient with me - I am currently deployed overseas and don't have access to all of my source files, so this will take me a day or two to upload this product into another format for you.

Actually, scratch that, I managed to include a word format version from OneDrive into the product itself; if you have already purchased it, you should be able to go in and download that as well. If you have any difficulties, please let me know.

Since the site won't let me leave a second review without deleting the original, I'll add this here: the revised version of this document is excellent, and I expect to get some significant mileage out of it. The new version has all the images attached within the PDF, ready to extract and use as handout backgrounds. They're the same superb quality but now full-size and with no extra work needed to make them usable.

Major kudos to Blackstone for releasing the revised document & keeping it the same cost - it'd be cheap at twice the price. Great for any GM who likes to increase immersion for their players by giving them evocative handouts!

Can I ask... why 47? Why not 53 or 39? 47 seems to be a theme... must be something Im missing.

Hey andrew B! To answer your question, we chose 47 because no one else making similar lists of tips, tricks, plots or items chose it before us; because sometimes, you go with what the dice tell you, and because there may or may not be 45 other reasons we picked that number, rather than 100 or 53. And frankly, we're insulted by the insinuation we'd ever use such a terrible number as 53!! For shame... :)

I have one of your products. 47 Key Concepts for Inventing a Fantasy Race or Culture. A very solid product. I was researching your line and kept seeing the 47s... kept asking myself why? Is there some wierd formula you roll to get a random number generated from 1 to 47? Cant be. 47 is prime. Kept wondering. Thanks for the answer.

The number 53 is for losers anyway. Unless you follow it with the words "million dollars".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
