Strange Stars

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

It's the far future, Old Earth is lost and shrouded in legend, and the children of paleo-humanity have long ago populated the stars, branching into new forms and strange cultures. Adventure is measured in light-years!

STRANGE STARS is a setting for any game where modern transhuman science fiction meets classic 70s space opera. Join a salvage mission to steal ancient tech from the wreck of a deranged sophont warship. Become a skiptracer in the lawless orbital megapolis of Interzone. Plan an elaborate data-vault heist on a diamond planet. Cross ceramic blades with a Zao Pirate in hard vacuum. Score sweet dreams or nightmare fuel from the oneirochemists of Eidolon. It's all somewhere in the STRANGE STARS!

STRANGE STARS is also availabe in Spanish from Hirukoa here.

This is a systemless setting book. You can run it in whatever game system you want to.

It is a a pretty good setting. Hard Transhumanist Space Opera with a Barbarella or Star Crash vibe. There is no FTL other than Hyperspace Gates (which I love). There are no gaming rules so you can adapt it to any setting.
I own the OSR and Fate versions. I would love to see a version for D&D 5e. That would be awesome.

Any chance of a 5e version? I would buy it.

Hi!

I'm a smidge confused as to which books I ought to get. I run SWN. Do I just need the OSR rulebook or should I get the setting book too? I'm happy to buy both if need be, I just didn't want to duplicate effort if not.

Thanks!

You need the setting book to maximally utilize the OSR rulebook.

Perfect! That was my guess, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks so much!

Would this work well with Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells?

I'm not super-familiar with SB&C, though what I know of it, you could certainly use a lot of Stranger Stars with it, though the underlying setting assumptions are a bit different (no magic in Strange Stars as written--but no reason you can't add it.)

Should've had a GM Day sale on the softcover. Would've bought it if the price were right.

FWIW, between the great art, and the efficient use of space, I'd say there's as much content in here as I've seen in some other PDFs of twice the page count. Definitely worth the price.

The Star Frontiers homage on cover was too much for me to resist.

Great book, the softcover is gorgeous. Choke full of great ideas. Are there any news on the hinted rules system you are working on?

Thanks, Marcus. The Fate gamebook draft is written and poised to go into layout. It's been a little slower than I would like, but John Till has been meticulous and trying to get it right. The old schoolish compatible gamebook will be after that.

It's been a year, any advance on that "old schoolish compatible gamebook"?

I'm responding to the edit suggestions on the draft now. It's written to plug into Stars Without Number, but it should be usable with other old school sci-fi systems.

I had the same concern about page count vs price, but I definitely understand Trey's answer. I wish I could of priced my most recent book a little lower too, but given the art investment, it wasn't feasible. Trey's art costs must of been impressively huge.

That much for only thirty pages?

I can understand your concern, but how much do you think it costs to produce a full color, art heavy book without the benefit of advertiser support or economies of scale? We've kept the price as low as possible.

"That much for only thirty pages?"

Oy, that sentiment grates.

Ignoring the gorgeous graphic design, 'Strange Stars' offers 30 pages of solid gaming material...and being system-neutral, there's *zero* waste. There are more ideas--usable ideas, crazy ideas, *fun* ideas--scattered about per page than most books five-times the size.

Verified purchaser here, and I've also reviewed other products. Said reviews were for $.99, 5-page works (with sometimes only 2 pages worth of material) and drab clip art. Doing the math, that's $6 for 30 pages of meh-to-middlin' text, while Causey offers a bursting, vibrant tome for just a little more.

So, yeah, "that much for only 30 pages". It's a bargain.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
