Neo-City Archives: Society Bulletin: Slang on the Streets

If there is one great thing to celebrate about the cyberpunk gaming community, it is the fact that we celebrate equal opportunity in our slang. We don’t care what book, movie or game the slang came from, as long as it fits the genre, we will welcome it, use it, and abuse it. We even catalog it, with cyberpunk genre slang dictionaries appearing in the early 1990's.

But with the web’s nearly living nature, with web pages like living cells that appear, grow, wither, die and vanish, these slang lexicons changed over two decades as well, appearing in literally hundreds of different iterations.

To help keep everything structurally organized while redeveloping Neo-City, it has become necessary to produce my own slang dictionary, built from those many, many prior variants and further expanded with slang from the Neo-City setting.

So heavily grounded in the efforts of other, this dictionary is a free item in the Neo-City Archives line, as well as being one of the few products one can expect to be regularly updated. Version 1.0 of this product contains more than 1,500 entries.

The current edition is Version 1.1

Version 1.1: Uploaded 6 June 2012. Includes about 100 new entries, mostly Chinese slang to reflect the Chinese economic ascendancy of the 2000's, much as Japanese slang reflected Japanese ecomonic ascendancy in the 1980's. Expanded to 38 pages.

Version 1.3: Uploaded 5 January 2013. Now in excess of 2,200 entries spanning 50 pages. More spy jargon, military slang, lots of ethnic slang ranging from Chinese and Korean to Russian to Australian to help fill out your simulations of cityspeak.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
