ALTERNATE OCCUPATIONS

A rules supplement for Dungeon Crawl Classics

One of the more innovative rules in Goodman Games’ Dungeon Crawl Classics is the ‘funnel.’ The funnel is when players take a band of commoners (0-level characters) and run them through the gauntlet of a full adventure. Players then pick through their surviving commoners and choose the character for further adventuring.

Alternate Occupations expands the concept of the funnel. New occupation tables are provided. The first is the Default Table that lists all of the occupations from Dungeon Crawl Classics plus new occupations as well as the associated race. Like the original Occupation Table, this table randomly determines both a character’s starting occupation and race. For groups that want a more focused funnel, separate tables were created for Race and Class. If you want a dwarf in your party - or even a party of dwarves - you can simply roll on the Dwarf Occupation table. If you want to avoid having your magic user starting life as a cheesemonger, roll on the Wizards Occupation table which has more relevant starting occupations like hedge wizard, street magician, and university student.

Also included in Alternate Occupations is a limited list of occupation definitions. This list provides a brief description of certain occupations whose true function may not be obvious or well known to both the players and the judge.

So add some more occupations to your angry mob or quivering band of would-be adventurers - expand the funnel!

I think the completely random nature of DCC's character creation is one of it's biggest strengths, so I'm likely to use the occupation by race or class organization, but it's hard to argue the usefulness of those charts given that it's likely a pretty [...]

A great resource for Dungeon Crawl Classics! It gives a universal list of all of the occupations which can be rolled for randomly, or you can give the players in your group a little more freedom in shaping and molding their 0-level characters since it [...]

I like that they have tables for races, occupations by class seems to screw up what DCC had going for it, i.e. 0 level characters that had to come into thier own. But if your set on a specific class this works great. It's only $2 & for that [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
