Napoleonic Battles IV PBM/PBEM rules

Watermarked PDF

NAPOLEONIC BATTLES IV is an exciting map-based wargame played by post or email. Easy to play yet challenging, it's quick to complete, not difficult to understand or pick up yet allows historical Napoleonic tactics and permutations. Gain a sense of achievement as you pulverise the enemy into dust! Games last 5 to 15 turns each, at a cost of £4 per with one run every two weeks until the battle is completed. Over 2,500 turns processed!

You can buy the rules here, which also provide details of how to take part – buying the rules puts you under no obligation to take part and you may find them interesting anyway.

Napoleonic Battles involves pouring over battle maps like a real general. Version 4.1, the latest, features greatly improved graphics. For example, a battalion of infantry is no longer represented by a symbol but by about 600 soldiers shown deployed in the formation they are currently formed in!

As well as taking part in tactical battles or our large games you have the advantage of being able to climb the greasy pole of success via Agema’s league table. Each time you win a tactical battle the result, whether it be a victory, defeat or draw is recorded. This gains you a position on the league table, the results of which are sent to a player upon the completion of each tactical game so you can see your relative position compared to other players (although if you lose your first game you won’t be on the league table initially since it only shows those with ten points or more).

All players begin with the rank of Lieutenant-General but as success is achieved promotion naturally comes and your rank improves! The highest score at the time of writing is 73, the lowest being nil.

Excluding the larger games, the average game length is 9.2 turns, calculated over 2,940 game turns played.

170 players are on the league table, although of these only about 35% make it on to the heady heights of the published part of table.

There is usually a large game of Napoleonic Battles running alongside the smaller tactical battles. When such a game is being set up existing players will be sent an invitation to take part. These involve lots of players, allowing for letters to be exchanged, although the chain of command for each side has to be respected to reflect real command and control. At time of writing Borodino is underway, and we've also played out Talavera and a fictional affair called Blutzengutz!

All great fun!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
