Adventures Dark and Deep Players Manual

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The Adventures Dark and Deep™ Players Manual contains all the rules you need to create and run a character; character classes, races, spells, rules for combat, equipment, social class, skills, and much more.

The Players Manual is the first core rulebook for the Adventures Dark and Deep™ game, an expansion and revision of the original 1st Edition rules that defined the role-playing hobby for a decade. Based on the original plans for expanding the game, Adventures Dark and Deep™ gives you new character classes like the jester, savant, mystic, and mountebank; new spells; a new combat system; new monsters; rules for weather and natural hazards; new magic items, and tons more. And it's all compatible with most old-school games, so you can use it with all your old and new adventures, settings, and supplements.

If you liked 1st Edition, you'll love Adventures Dark and Deep™.

I found there are Errata on BRW official site, could you apply those changes to the PDF directly?

Love what I’ve seen so far in the PDFs, any plans on updating the covers of the 3 core books to be in line with the amazing art and layout of the newer books (including orange spine) ?

Not connected to the production of this - just a customer, but I recently backed this avail only in KS version:

I have Rules Cyclopedia 1st DMG Unearthed Arcana Wilderness and Dungeoneers Survival and Monster 1 and II
The price of buying is not the barrier. 100 bucks for 3 reasonable hardcovers is ok.

What you need to do, is explain to me, what do I get, that I don't have, that I really need. How much redundancy exists in the design. I bought Rules Cyclopedia mainly for a one manual option. I don't NEED to drag the others to a game location. I found the 1st players wasn't really worth my purchase.

Sell me on getting this :)

If you've already got a favorite OSR game and just want to add to it, then you don't really need this book. I would suggest you get The Book of Lost Lore, which has all of the new material from here, but doesn't restate the rules you already have. All the new classes, races, spells, etc. are in that.

Hope that helps!

Heh I'm glad I could help. I'd rather steer you to the right book than make a few extra bucks by selling you the wrong one.

There are quite a few other class PDFs and an interesting Asian-inspired one Golden Scroll of Justice which has an ADD take on Monk and martial arts styles.

I recently backed a Cthulhu book for ADD - that one I cannot speak on from experience (not out yet) but it was very popular in the KS. I’m not a horror guy but got cos liked his other stuff and heck, may get something I can toss in for giggles in a regular canpaign

No, we have no plans for a second edition that incorporates the errata at this time.

A couple of questions.
1-I noticed the absence of Mystic on the level limit list. Is this the same limit as cleric?
2-I am curious as to why you removed Obscurement from the druid list (and placed it on the mystic list I believe).

A Few more:
3-Why the removal of the Monk? With the Scarlet Brotherhood so prevalent in Greyhawk it is still a relevant class.
4-Noted that the Barkskin spell has no duration.

Can Grey Elves become cavaliers? Their entry and the master class availability chart suggest that they cannot, while the entry for cavalier and the grey elf level limit chart (which lists cavaliers adjacent to fighters, while the entries for, say, dwarves and wood elves do not) seem to indicate that they can. Also (and this is just nitpicking) gr*y is spelled with an "e" throughout the main entry for the race, but with an "a" on the master chart and the entry for cavalier (among other places I may have missed). The book's great, by the way.

Hi Joe; glad you like the book. No, grey elves cannot become cavaliers. The reference to grey elves in the cavalier section is an error, as is the reference to cavaliers in the level limit table. They'll be fixed in the next printing of the book (plus the spelling of "grey" elves in the table headings). Thanks for the catch!

1. Was the first Kickstart basically PoD here? I recall your later ones being like that so assume same :)
2. Then by "printing of the book", I assume you mean uploading a new PDF source to them to generate PDFs and PoDs?
3. I guess it has not been done? Last update of the PDF it says on this page is December 2015 - any word on when it will be fixed? One downside of Physical prints is that early adopters get more errors ;) one GREAT thing about PoD is that the fixes to editions can occur much faster than waiting for a new printing to become economically feasible. Of course, for all I know - PoD STILL requires cost to update the source?

Is the omission of strength limits for human females vs human males intentional or accidental? Compared to all the other races that have that , this omission seems odd.

All humans can have 3-18 in all ability scores. The only difference between male and female humans is exceptional strength for fighters; females can only go up to 18/50, while males can go up to 18/00.

The rules for fighting with multiple weapons on p.89 of the player's manual seem odd, as they suggest that high Dex makes you worse (see the example of a Dex 17 fighter below the table explaining how cumulative penalties work). In the original DMG p.70, Gygax had a -2/-4 penalty, improved by reaction/attack adj. for high Dex, with the proviso that the positive modifier could only cancel a penalty and never gave a bonus to hit. Is the intention here to build on this system?

I really want to buy this, but I do nearly everything on my laptop with customization and heavy use of cut and paste.

Since the DRM on this prevents this (if I understood the review and sidebars), I cannot buy the PDF. It's not that I care about the DRM per-se, if there were another form like in software via keys etc, I would be fine - but limiting copy/paste impacts usability for me.

There is an irony for those like me who are waiting to buy this...

Man, people really have to start putting in actual useful content in more of these previews. No offense, folks, but the cover, frontispiece, set-up page, table of contents, foreword and Page 1 of the introduction is not giving me any reasons to buy.

A sample of how actual rules are written and presented would be useful, especially if the sample shows how this rule set sets itself apart from its close competitors. A page or two from the character classes section showing how one familiar class is handled. Maybe a page or two each from the spells, combat and skills sections. With so many versions of the old game available, and this being one of the more expensive, it would help to see what makes it special--a table of contents and introductory material really don't accomplish that.

My suggestion is that you check out one of the new class modules that I've just released. There is one each for the Bard, Jester, Mystic, Mountebank, and Savant. Each has a complete class description plus all the spells associated with the class. Each one is only $1, and I think you'll get the sort of impression you're looking for (you might get what you're looking for in the preview, too).

Hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
