History once spoke of individuals able to accomplish miracles, eventually eradicated or bred out by a population too frightened of what they didn't understand.  As science filled in the void left by absent gods, these gifted individual decreased until they became all but extinct.  But they never completely vanished.  Each generation, such a rare being appeared with abilities subtle to extreme.  However, despite their desire to reveal themselves, forces continually prevent them from doing so.

To many of those who know them, they're of an inferior class.  To others, including themselves, they are considered an improvement on the design of man, an upper echelon.

The apex.

Apex is a module for DEM's Ultramodern4, a plug-in rather than a full setting: a set of rules and ideas to allow any number of homebrew settings to work within it.  There is a basic background involving people who gain unnatural powers, but don't let that limit you if you wish to use it as a jumping off point.

Apex includes the following:

--Customize abilities and boost powers with over 400 new feats.

--New sacrifice rules to trade penalties for new abilities.

--New lifepaths for normal people and apex.

--Eleven new ladders to focus your superpowers.

--One new superhero class, paragon path, and epic destiny.

--New adversary templates and monsters.

NOTE:  Apex requires Ultramodern4 rules, which can be downloaded for free in OGL or purchased with art and layout (/index.php?manufacturers_id=2363).

I just received my copy of UM5, and access to Apex and I wish I found this before Mutants and masterminds. I am unsure what the best way to start. My hope is to revive the game I started but in this system. I have characters who already have powers. they are pretty well themed and I can see stuff in UM5/Apex to come close to the same designs.

Ultimately, how would you suggest starting A) from scratch(because I may have some new players) B) take a character who had powers and migrate to this system.
Hopefully I make sense. Character creation can always be interesting. There are different schools of thought when it comes to starting point.

Well, if you have UM5 and Apex, you are commenting on the wrong page, because this is for the 4th Edition version of Apex, not the 5th. :)
If you have new players, it really depends on how powerful you want the characters to be. Like any system, starting characters have limited powers. So you need to ask how powerful do you want them to be from the start.

I have bought this book and I have a few questions.

Is there a way to have a version without the border? It does occasionally interfere with the text making it difficult to read.

Will you be offering a softcover POD of the book?

To be perfectly honest, there are currently no plans to offer a softcover version of the book. I really really like the look of the color hardcover. We will look into revising the border at a future date--that's something we can do. Thanks for the support.

Thank you for your response. I hope to see more material for this game in the future.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
