Description:

A city of mysteries, secrets, and dark histories, Ptolus lies forever in the shadow of a towering stone spire reaching impossibly high into the sky, itself an enigma and a reminder of evil long past. Ptolus is a place where the supernatural is expected, and treachery lies around every corner—or is it that the supernatural lies around every corner and treachery is expected? Either way, Ptolus is a city of danger, magic, intrigue, and above all: adventure.

“Some place needs to be the worst place in the world. Why not here?”—Brusselt Airmol, well-known rogue adventurer

This 32-page guide is designed to introduce you as a player to the fundamentals of Ptolus, so that you can create and run a character with plenty of knowledge about the world. The city is rich enough in detail that it’s difficult to absorb it all at once, so keep this information handy to reference while you play in a Ptolus campaign—and be prepared to discover that what you learn in these pages is only the very briefest of overviews.

The guide includes a full map of the city of Ptolus, as well as an introduction to the city and sections on campaign look and feel, the various local districts, noble houses, organizations, history, NPCs, religion, the larger world, character creation, magic, equipment, and more.

All this material also appears in the Ptolus book, which builds from the information found in this player’s guide.

You can download the Player’s Guide to Ptolus free here as a PDF or buy it in print at your game store for only $2.99. For more information, visit www.ptolus.com.

Test review, to look for pumpkins. If this has anything to do with Monte Cook, then it's probably a no-brainer. Yes, I like Monte's stuff. [...]

The precept of the Ptolus campaign setting, Monte Cook does it again with this explorative adventure - this is the 4th time I have run it using the Pathfinder rules - and its extremely exciting. [...]

A must-have for any fans of Ptolus! It really sets the mood for the players and they really feel like they know the city, which they do, of course. A great idea to make a player's guide to a setting, saves the GM a lot of work! [...]

Monte Cook's Ptolus was a well thought-out incredibly detailed product. However, his campaign world suffered from unfortunate timing. When the bottom dropped out of third edition, it kind of left his books stranded. If you want to know about Ptolus, [...]

An RPG Resource review: This work is an attempt to get around that common problem of your character knowing more about his surroundings than his player does! Distributed as a free PDF or sold as a bundle to pass around the table so that each player [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
