D20 RUNE PATHS

INTRODUCTION

The misty floor of the ancient forest held many secrets. Tolmen was searching for the marker. He and his companions were pursued and had to escape.  It had to be here somewhere. Then, just as the pursuers were within hearing, Tolmen found the moss encrusted marker stone and its worn runic surface.

"This is it," he said excitedly.

With a quick gathering of magical energies Tolmen opened the Rune Path. To his companions it looked like they were on just the right angle to see a narrow trail marked by old stones leading into the shadowy depths of the forest. It would lead from this place within the thickest parts of the Farnhorst Forest to the edge nearest the city of Excelsior - their destination. Tolmen knew it would feel like only a handful of miles but the distance was really a dozen times that.

Tolmen said quickly, "We should hurry before they are upon us."

Far along the path something cried out. A bestial, primeval, sound of something far older than the speaking races and something far larger.

"What was that?" Palfrey asked, her eyes wide with surprise and a little fear.

"I do not know," Tolmen answered. "But if we stay on the path it will not see us."

The companions girded their courage and all except Tolmen looked back, as if comparing their chances with their pursuers to that of the primeval beast that made the cry they all heard. With a deep apprehensive breath they entered the Rune Path.

WHAT ARE RUNE PATHS?

In the ancient forests there are ways between space, and some very old rangers will say time, that can only be found by those with deep knowledge. Those outside of the way of the forests can never find these paths. They are the domain of the guardians and servants of the wood.

A Rune Path is a quasi-dimensional trail that leads from one place to another. They are difficult to find but are potentially in any place. To access a Rune Path the spell-caster makes a check and if successful they can locate it after the minimum time has elapsed searching.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
