The legendary megadungeon is here at last!

More than thirteen levels and over 1,500 keyed encounters of perils, monsters, traps, and treasure to bedevil your players. Find levels of warring humanoids, the deadly Arena, ancient artifacts, lost temples, portals to other worlds, and the ultimate secret of the dungeons... the Mad Archmage himself.

Originally released as a free electronic book in serial format, the Castle of the Mad Archmage has been completely revised, expanded, and updated. It is a complete adventuring environment, from the surface ruins to the deepest caves and caverns.

You and your players could literally spend years exploring the dungeons beneath the Castle and still not discover everything. It can accomodate characters from first to fifteenth experience level and beyond.

Castle of the Mad Archmage is written using the Adventures Dark and Deep™ rules, and is compatible with most Old School type rules with little or no conversion needed.

Note: You must also purchase the Map Book and the Illustration Book in order to run this adventure (due to a technical limitation of the site, you need to add each to your cart separately).

Also available in a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game edition!

That's a good question! I know they were there before. I'll get in touch with tech support and hopefully they can figure out what's going on.

Heard back from the support folks. It turns out that when you see a number on that "Reviews" tab, it's including every time people gave a star rating, even if they didn't do a text review as well. They say breaking that out is on the list of things to do, but not anytime soon.

Strange. I remember seeing genuine reviews there also.

It looks as if I'll have to write something once I read it. Which I'll do more frequently when the hard copy arrives. It's too easy to neglect it when it's on a hard drive somewhere.

Kevin K - can you please email me at joseph@brwgames.com? I'd like to know which of the three pdfs is giving you problems, as you're the only person to report this sort of issue thusfar. Might be a corrupted file?

This is probably the best large D&D dungeon I've every owned. I downloaded the free version years ago. This is the same dungeon with a very professional polish added.

But, and this is a big but, the PDF will not run on my surface. I can run bigger Pathfinder or GURPS PDF's without a problem. I've had up to SIX of their books open at the same without my tablet slowing down. So why do the Castle of the Mad Archmage PDFs take three minutes to open just the first page? I don't know. They are also slow but usable on my desktop. Since I can run things by many other publishers fine it's got to be a formatting problem by BRW.

OK, the problem isn't in the PDF or in my surface, it's in Adobe. Removed the latest version of Adobe Reader Touch and went back to an older version that wasn't touch enabled and the PDF works fine. Going to see if I can convince my group to give this a go starting next weekend.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
