Adventures in the East Mark - Basic Rule Set (Red Box)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the East Mark, young adventurer. I know it was not easy to get here but just consider the rewards: the wondrous treasures, the power and the glory that await you.

It will not be easy to achieve all of this; indeed nothing is easy in the East Mark. You will have to work your way with your sword and your cunning.

Ha! I knew you would like that. Here, take this map and the instructions so you can survive a world full of adventures.

Be prepared to meet legendary characters and battle horrible monsters in dark dungeons or impregnable fortresses. I hope you have what's need to survive. And no, I am not referring to your weapons or your faithful companions, although they will certainly be necessary. I was referring to something more important, something essential: your imagination!

Adventures in the East Mark Basic Rule Set (aka the Red Box) is a gloriously illustrated retro fantasy roleplaying game. It is the ultimate expression of the OSR movement that’s inspired by early roleplaying games. This is an English translation of a popular Spanish game designed by Pedro Gil and his own gaming group. All of the original Spanish artist works are included, presented for the first time in full color.

The Spanish game Aventuras en La Marca del Este began as Pedro Gil's homebrew campaign using the rules of the world's most famous game as revised in Frank Mentzer’s (BECMI) Red Box. Pedro's game included nine character classes and new rules on mounted combat, aerial combat, seafaring and ship battles. Many years later, Aventuras en La Marca del Este it is one of the most popular role-playing games in Spain. By enlisting incredible artists that are now rising stars in the RPG industry such as A.J. Manzanedo, Jorge Carrero and Víctor Guerra, the "La Marca" team produced an incredibly captivating "retroclone" role-playing game that is an old school experience wrapped in old world flare.

This is the first ever English edition of the game, now called Adventures in the East Mark. This Basic Rule Set has everything that you need to play a game with the deep traditions of the original fantasy roleplaying game imbued with an authentic European flavor.

What's the level spread in this one? Is it B/X or just B?

It looks awesome.

The main issue we had with this was the poor English translation. The books, packaging, and layout all look great and got us interested in playing again, but the translation was more like reading a VCR directions from translated from Japanese.

So this goes to Gallant Knight Games for what, to stay in limbo? Terrible company that only wants to focus on Tiny D6 system. This retro clone deserves a push. It's quality is leaps and bounds over the other osr books and I know because I buy all of them. What a shame.

Gallant Knight Games is only involved in the distribution of the game, under agreement with Hardboiled Games.

Hardboiled Games is responsible for new product and the product line as translated to English.

When are the other books going to be translated? The Campaign Book and more importantly the class book?

Neither the original page (http://xdpublishing.com/why-should-i-buy-adventures-in-the-east-mark-red-box/), nor the website itself has any content on it. Nor does the supposed Publisher's Website contact (http://www.nocturnal-media.com/forum/index.php) nor its homepage have anything relating to this game. So what's going on? Does this game still have any support???

Sorry for the confusion. The Nocturnal Media web address you link above is now updated on this site (we migrated hosting recently and neglected to update the address here). We are rebuilding support for AEM, including a dedicated website at http://eastmarkcodex.com. Translation of the Blue Box is almost complete and once that is in hand we'll make an announcement and officially be up and running for AEM again!

Thanks very much for your prompt response, Stewart! That's very reassuring, and good to hear work is progressing on further support for the line. This has been on my radar for a while now, and when I saw it pop up on the current charity bundle for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, I wanted to take another look at it. I'll head over to the new site right now!

Hi David,

Thank you, I'm looking forward to the fixed PDFs. I've had a hance to skim through the Basic Rule Set via Adobe Reader and it looks completely amazing.

What options will become available, if any, for us to buy print editions of AitEM?

All 3 of the Basic Rule Set PDFs cannot be opened on my iPad (see Phillip B's remark below). In addition, they cannot be opened with Preview on my desktop Mac. I was able to view them with Adobe Reader, but not being able to view them in my default PDF viewer and not being able to use them on my iPad is a deal breaker. My only option to use these rules, should I choose to play the game, is with a PDF reader I don't use on a desktop computer that I can't lug around to the game table.

Please fix and/or optimize the PDFs for portable device reading (specifically, iPad) and for use in standard PDF readers, such as Preview (it is the Mac OS default reader).

Hi,
Is there a Version I can actually use on my Ipad, as none of the PDF's seem to optimised to do so?

None of the Viewers I have/used recognise the format. which seems a little strange.

thanks in advance for any advice

On my android phone, I had a similar problem--downloaded it, but my PDF viewers said it wasn't recognized. What worked for me was to open it in Chrome and let it sit for a while until it loaded in, and then save it from there. I think for whatever reason the download isn't actually finishing. I know Android and iOS are different beasts, though, so what worked for me may not work for you.

Hi there,
Could someone tell me how the rules differ from D&D, if indeed they do. For example, do characters start off with a small number of hit points or as we call it, nearly dead?

Mike, The East Mark ruleset is OGL and largely based of BECMI D&D.
Yes, you start off with low Hit Points. I hope you survive! :)

Thanks David.
I'm wondering why I should choose this game over the dozens of other clones out there, some of which are free and darn good. After all, the setting doesn't appear until the "Blue Box".
Cheers
Mike

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
