Castles & Crusades Codex Nordica

ADD TO WISHLIST >

With iron grips they held their ships at sea. Face to the wind, back to the mist, they cut the water in their dragon prow ships, bringing the song of death and plunder upon the backs of gods that rose from the maelstrom of eternity. With axe and sword, shield and spear, they rose as if from the ether and opened the world to a storm of primeval lust.

The Codex Nordica plunges into their world, exploring the myths and cultures of the Vikings, from Odin's Ravens to the Jotun fortress of Gymirsheim. Brian Young explores the Nine Worlds of the northmen, the legends and myths, the magical creatures, gods, heroes, giants and monsters that peopled them.

All this is presented as a backdrop to the game you are already playing. Expanding upon the core Castles & Crusades material Codex Nordica brings a host of new wizardry and enchantments, gods for the characters, warriors and battle craft. Added on to all this, are new materials for the Castle Keeper, all designed to enhance rather than hinder play.

Codex Nordica brings the Viking myths to life at the table

Disturbingly, this book echoes some of the talking points of the racist branch of modern Asatru...

"Among the many peoples of Mannheimr, they have lost their way with the teachings and wisdom of Odin Allfather. ... Other beliefs and gods have crept into the world under Ymir's skull, in time, and have begun to threaten it with their own corruptions and perversions." (pg 19)

That's... definitely an interpretation.

This is great stuff, this is exactly what I was looking for. Not over done fantasy, well researched and was a joy to read.

One more tidbit to add, which Thomas D's comments brought to mind. Thomas, you couldn't have said it better - that this is what gaming information should look like. It's comparable to Chaosium's best work on Gloranthan religions. And for the first time since certain runs of a comic book Thor (I'm looking at a specific serial which Roy Thomas wrote.) Odin is written as he appeared in the old stories: A rough guy who really IS king of the gods and would do anything - sacrifice anyone, even most of his kingdom and subjects - to postpone Ragnarok for as long as possible, even though he knows it's STILL going to happen eventually. Makes for some really good stories and RPG campaigns.

Recently picked up the hardcover (and the closely related Codex Germania) and was blown away with how well researched and written this book is. This is what I WISH the Norse Mythology chapter in the original Deities and Demigods had been like. Serious scholarship, faithfulness to the source material, and well adapted to our favorite RPG. My only gripe is the maps could be better.

@Thomas D. -- Thanks for that! We appreciate that and you'll be pleased to know we are working with Dungeon Fog and a crew of hard working folks to upgrade our maps, so at some point all those maps in all our books will be updated and then the PDF files will be updated as well. ~ Tim

- review originally posted at TLG's site, from where I bought my PDF and softcover -

One of the more meticulously researched books on the Scandinavian lands and legends, not just game-related. There's so much rich material here. Here is the rich ore from which Kirby and Lee mined and alloyed so successfully and has been put on the screen. No, this isn't the Marvel version of the legends - this is the stuff from which they made their own version, their own adventures.

Now, players and gamesmasters have even more data than Lee & Kirby had, with which to build their/our own adventures, our own cosmic odysseys. We'd have given our eyeteeth for this book in 1978!

How could the book be improved? Color. More pages. Maybe hardback printing. In other words, more of what it already is.

And it's just plain fun to read. Kudos to everyone involved!

*jeep! and God Bless! (Thank you, Red!)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
