Icons Assemble!

It’s time to be a hero!

Icons is a tabletop game of superhero adventure, creating exciting stories of the imagination with your friends, based around the heroes you create. The Assembled Edition of the game features:

  • Quick Hero Creation! A few die rolls are all it takes to create your hero, giving you the spark for your imagination to bring it all together. Describe character abilities on a numerical scale, or use adjectives like “Great” and “Amazing,” as best suits your style and situation.

  • Flexible System! Just a few basic game mechanics resolve in-game actions, but they expand to cover a wide range of options, making Icons easy to learn, but broad enough to keep things interesting.

  • Heroic Determination! Bring the qualities of your heroes into play to gain advantages or perform amazing stunts, or to create trouble, from personal drama to weaknesses, in order to make your hero even more determined to save the day!

  • Universe Creation! Collaborate to create your own comic book universe and play out the stories of the different heroes in it.

Icons is your all-in-one package for superhero roleplaying adventure: quick, easy, descriptive, and fun!

Steve Kenson, designer of the best-selling Mutants & Masterminds delivers a superpowered role-playing game inspired by the fast-playing old-school games and the new generation of narrative role-play! Within its pages are complete rules for character creation, abilities and powers, random adventure generation, a rogue's gallery of villains, and all the superheroic action you can handle!

Great game, but the pdf really needs to be optimized to run on a tablet more quickly. Pages take forever to load.

I'm looking for a superhero-format RPG to play with my 5yo kid. Therefore, rules should be simple to learn and straight-forward.

Is this kid-friendly or recommended for kids?

Thanks

I run Icons for my 6 year old and 8 year old daughters and they love it. We tend to simplify the use of Determination and Qualities to something closer to bennies, but the rest works out fine. Fainting Goat Games' Improbable Tales are also pretty well pitched adventures for the younger player.

I bought the PDF and the game looks great but each page loads VERY slowly. Is there a no art version or something I could get? Thanks.

Is there any kind of discount on the PDF if you've already purchased the Assembled Edition in print?

How compatible is this with the previously released material? There is tons of it and some I am really interested in. Is there something that has become obsolete with the AE?

Pretty compatible. Check the powers, simplify the Specialties. The Qualities and Challenges will be a broken-down version of the Assembled Edition's qualities, but still very usable.

For powers, you want to look at the great powers what's different post so you figure out what they want, but it's not tough.

How does this interrelate with the Great Power supplement?

Just to address this question: Great Power predates it, and some of its material has been absorbed into this. http://stevekenson.com/2014/05/05/icons-assembled-whats-different/

Asked Steve this question on his blog; his answer: "The power-set in Assembled Edition is essentially a condensed version of Great Power, so it is quite useful (IMHO) in terms of detail, more extras and limits, and examples of “re-skinned” powers for particular concepts."

Probably one of my favorite methods of playing supers nowadays. The only thing I like more is using my own FATE core powered game for the "more serious" aberrant style story I wrote.

What is the difference between this edition and the base edition? I have the later and like it so I'm curious about this version.

I love how you have gone on to use the old marvel rpg terms for the abilities and powers relative power levels. Amazing Strength sounds so much cooler than strength 8.

Is there going to be a new character sheet available for download once the book is released, and if so, where?
Also, are there any plans to update/revise the ICONS Character Folio? I use mine a lot and would love to have the updated rules incorporated in the program.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
