Icons Assemble!

It’s time to be a hero!

Icons is a tabletop game of superhero adventure, creating exciting stories of the imagination with your friends, based around the heroes you create. The Assembled Edition of the game features:

  • Quick Hero Creation! A few die rolls are all it takes to create your hero, giving you the spark for your imagination to bring it all together. Describe character abilities on a numerical scale, or use adjectives like “Great” and “Amazing,” as best suits your style and situation.

  • Flexible System! Just a few basic game mechanics resolve in-game actions, but they expand to cover a wide range of options, making Icons easy to learn, but broad enough to keep things interesting.

  • Heroic Determination! Bring the qualities of your heroes into play to gain advantages or perform amazing stunts, or to create trouble, from personal drama to weaknesses, in order to make your hero even more determined to save the day!

  • Universe Creation! Collaborate to create your own comic book universe and play out the stories of the different heroes in it.

Icons is your all-in-one package for superhero roleplaying adventure: quick, easy, descriptive, and fun!

Steve Kenson, designer of the best-selling Mutants & Masterminds delivers a superpowered role-playing game inspired by the fast-playing old-school games and the new generation of narrative role-play! Within its pages are complete rules for character creation, abilities and powers, random adventure generation, a rogue's gallery of villains, and all the superheroic action you can handle!

A general question on suitability to setting; how suitable are these rules for a setting based on early 1930s era with heroes that are more reflective of the Pulp genre archetypes like Paragon, Mesmerist, Mad Sicentist, Man of Mystery and a few that are a wee bit too weird to categorize? As well, are heroes that have power levels more akin to what are typically called street heroes (sorry, aren't familiar enough with ICONS to know where on the 1-10 scale that would fit) doable with these rules?
Would ICONS Orgins add some additional tools that wold be helpful with running such a setting and campaign?

Icons is aimed at a fairly four-color "Bronze Age" style of comic book super-heroics. That said, it works fine for lower-powered heroes for pulp or street-level styles, so long as you're okay with the notion that the upper 20–30% of the 1–10 scale won't get used as much; those characters tend to top-out at Great (6) to Incredible (7) in abilities for the most part.

Icons Origins does indeed add some extra options and details for hero creation. The optional system for Knacks, in particular, is good for lower-powered characters. "Vigilantes & Villainy" from Icons Presents also offers suggestions for a more street-level or Iron Age style with the game.

Thanks for the reply Stephen.
So far I've realized I'd want to remove Artficial and Unearthly from the Phase 1: Origins table, as they just don't fit my setting I'm trying to adapt. From your comments, I'd also need to change the Abilities and Power caps on that table from 10 to 7. I'm also now considering reorganizing the Level Determination table to cap out at level 6, but aren't sure if maybe it should be level 5?
With the deals offered in the sale, I did buy Origins and Vigilantes & Villains.

I just bought the Fantasy Grounds ruleset and discovered there are no actual rules in the ruleset. So I'm preparing to assemble one from the pdf. Is there really no FG version of the core rulebook I can buy?

I'd like to try my hand at making heroes and villains for this system. Is there a 3PP agreement? How about a Discord?

A question on the Immortality power. It says, as a limit, define something that can kill you permanently. Is that limit an intended part the power, and mandatory, or is it like other limits that let you take an extra?

Great Power details that the Blocked limit (where you define an attack or effect that can kill you permanently) is a regular limit on Immortality and not required.

What is the page size of this one? It looks like A5? I hope so, I'm a sucker for the smaller format lately and have been looking for a new supers game.

Hello Steve,

I have a question about Determination.

In the core rule, the calculation is : All heroes in Icons have a starting Determination level of 6, minus 1 for each power the hero has. Each attribute with a level greater than 6 also counts as a power. A hero with Coordination 8 and two powers has Determination 3: 6 minus 2 (for powers), minus 1 (for attribute). A hero’s minimum Determination level is 1, regardless of the number of powers the hero may have.

In Great Powers : Once you have generated your hero’s powers (and modified the rolled powers as desired) you can figure the hero’s Determination level, as described in Icons: subtract the hero’s total number of powers from 6. The result is the hero’s starting Determination level, with a minimum of 1. Each ability above level 6 also counts as a power, as does each extra of a power, not specifically balanced by the addition of a limit. Some power limits may reduce a power’s starting Determination “cost”...See more

Great Power clarifies the language from the Assembled Edition book, as it was obviously not sufficiently clear: Extras count as powers towards reducing starting Determination total unless they are specifically "bought off" with Limits.

A hero's minimum Determination is always 1. Great Power clarifies that power limits cannot reduce the Determination cost of a power BELOW zero. That is, a power cannot have a "negative" Determination cost.

Does the removal of Outdated Index mean that you removed the IconsAEIndex.pdf from Assembled Edition group of .pdf files for download or was that just an edit to the error as mentioned in Randall O remark? Because (1.) I can still see IconsAEIndex.pdf file in my library and (2.) that file content in my library still has the same error mentioned.

The IconsAEIndex.pdf file was removed from the product. I don't know why it still shows in your library, perhaps a legacy effect for previous purchasers. I'll follow-up with DriveThru about it.

The index, or parts of it, seem to refer to the original edition. Bending and breaking for example points to page 60 when it is on 133. Most of the samples in the index provided here seem to be far to early in the book to be anything but the original shorter edition. Is it possible that the wrong index was uploaded?

It does look like this fan-submitted index should be associated with the original edition of Icons rather than the Assembled Edition. We'll attribute it to the correct product. Apologies for the confusion.

There are mental powers like Telepathy and Telekinesis, yes (along with a number of others) and there is a Magic power, which is essentially duplicating other super-powers by casting spells.

The powers chapter in the Assembled Edition is 45 pages, 10 of which are devoted to devices. No one power description is longer than a page and most are less. The "M" is for "Magic" essay in Icons A to Z goes into more detail on magic, magical powers, and creatures in Icons and is available separately as a PDF or in the complete A to Z collection.

Magic powers last for as long as their usual duration, or for the duration of the chapter, whichever comes first. So you can cast a spell to fly and then cast a spell to create a protective force field then cast a spell to throw blasts of eldritch power without losing the effects of the previous spells. Generally when you turn off a power or allow it to lapse, the spell has ended, so if you cast a spell to transform into a cat and then return to human form, you’ve ended the spell.

The Icons mailing list on Yahoo is a useful resource, as is the Icons Facebook group.

Or are you guys still distributed through them regardless? (I'd rather avoid Green Ronin entirely if possible.)

If I printed it from Drivethrurpg, would the book have the Green Ronin symbol on it?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
