A long time ago, humans walked the face of the world, but were destroyed for their arrogance and hubris. The Bright Ones lifted up the simple animals of forest and field, giving them the ability to think, build, and stand on their own two feet. In order to keep the newly Favored animals from making the same mistakes the humans did, The Bright Ones gave them the Compact — a book telling them how to live together in harmony.

Those who engage in dark deeds or refuse the ways of Harmony eventually become Dire — sinister, twisted versions of themselves, acting out of greed, vengeance, or selfishness. You must protect the town of Cairn and help it survive the winter. But beware! For you can become Dire, too.

Can you stop the Witch before she curses all the berries of the forest? Will you find the source of corruption withering Farmer Cottonstar’s fields? What of the growing threat of otters and moles working outside the town? Using a system of adventure seeds and story paths, you become the heroes of Cairn. The town survives or thrives based on your actions. And with 20 species and 20 professions, you can play almost any critter you can think of.

The Cairn RPG is a fantasy role-playing game where even the smallest creatures can have the biggest adventures.

System Information

Cairn has 20 races and 20 professions, allowing for 400 unique character combinations. Gameplay is simple, focusing on fixing and supporting the town of Cairn where all of the critters live. Players roll a 1d12 for resolution, drawing upon an old-school approach of only rolling for the important elements of play. Need to sew a button? Done. Need to jump over a crevass? Roll. Time to play? Yes!

Just guessing: “Scrapper” is basically the equivalent of the “Monk” class of DND, yes? :)

Just got the pdf, enjoying the read so far. It looks the perfect fit for my Dark Sword minis :D

I can't find a profile for the Badger thought it seems to be referenced as a playable character.

Also, I found a typo p.89 "Platypuses are twice the size of the average Favored. They receive +1 HP per level.
Armadillos can only use..." should say Platypuses.

How well would this system work for a campaign inspired by the Redwall series?

Very well. It's more fantastical than historical and the selection of animal races is a little different. But it's got a similar tone and otherwise is a good match.

How do I get my PDF? I sponsored the Kickstarter and they sent my DL link to the wrong email address.

Why is the PDF 112 megs in size? That is way too large for a book with that page count.

I'm a KS backer at the free book level. Is it a mistake that I'm not seeing an option to get the paperback for free?
Customer avatar
Adrian M November 03, 2014 11:35 pm UTC
It's not a mistake, no. Ross and his team are working on delivering a printed copy to the Kickstarter backers as soon as they can afford to do so (yes, I am also a backer).

Bear in mind that without their involvement, there wouldn't even be a finished book at all and you would not have even received a PDF.

Absolutely! I didn't mean to come across as ungrateful - I just wanted to clarify what the situation was.

If you were a backer of the Kickstarter, then you should receive a free PDF. Contact the team at info AT souljargames DOT com to see if you can resolve the problem with the PDF.

I was a sponsor of the Kickstarter and have been trying to get my PDF copy.

I've tried contacting through the KS page and the FB page.

How do I get in contact with the company to get the PDF I supported through Kickstarter?

Email them at info AT souljargames DOT com. They should respond through that.

Is there any place where I can send Errata?

Just small typo's easily missed, but I came across.
I can also put them on the blog or facebook or wherever you want actually.

For example, page 109, top of the page says "enchater" should be enchanter.
There are probably other small bits to correct, but if it's easy to fix it before they start printing it's best to gather all the small bits people may find in the pdf :)

Right now, the best place is to post errata to the blog comments page. In the future, we'll have a dedicated Cairn RPG website (we're working on that now).

I completely agree with you. Let's make Cairn the best it can possibly be before we go to press! Thank you Geert!

Your from Berlin?
It's sad it's over now, but perhaps for next year you can try getting in cotnact with the team of Eurofurence.

EF is a furry con held in Berlin, you might want to check it out, and I'm sure they will have interest in the rpg's theme.

The discount that was sent for those backing this on Kickstarter does not work properly. Instead, it makes it cost around £4,000 each.

Hi Sophie, Alyssa Faden here from SJ. I too saw what you are experiencing. We're working with DTRPH now to see what happened there and will get right back to you!

(unless of course you want to spend 4k on a book ... no? darn! ;) )

You should now be in possession of a second (corrected) link; I hope you enjoy!

Ross I August 07, 2014 9:41 pm UTC
Hi Sophie. It's Ross from SoulJAR. I'm already starting to get word that the corrected download code indeed works. You should check your email for the new code. And, of course, we want to hear what you think!

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
