Twenty three short essays from twenty three exceptional Game Masters and creators that will invariably aid you in your quest to make your games better because they reflect what happens, rather than what you have planned.” — Sean’s Pick of the Day review

2015 Golden Geek Award nominee for Best Supplement and Best Artwork & Presentation

Improvisation is key to running any roleplaying game. It’s an essential skill for every game master and player, and can mean the difference between a good gaming session and a great one. Until now, there hasn’t been a system-neutral book that covers improvisation for game masters from every angle.

Unframed: The Art of Improvisation for Game Masters is that book. An anthology of 23 essays by a diverse group of award-winning authors, designers, and experienced game masters, Unframed gives you the tools and inspiration to improvise better, “wing it” without hesitation, and get killer results.

Inside this book you’ll find advice on improvising dialogue scenes by Robin D. Laws (Hillfolk, Ashen Stars), a look at “Just In Time” improvisation from Jennell Jaquays (Caverns of Thracia, Dark Tower), advice on listening to your players by Jason Morningstar (Fiasco, Durance), tricks for handling curveballs from Jess Hartley (Changeling: The Lost, Geist: The Sin-Eaters), tips on improv in horror games from Kenneth Hite (Trail of Cthulhu, GURPS Horror), insightful essays by the authors of the ENnie Award-winning game mastering blog Gnome Stew, and many more. Unframed collects the wisdom of 23 top designers and gaming industry veterans, and offers 23 perspectives on improvisation.

The full author list is too long for the sidebar here, where it usually appears -- Unframed features essays by John Arcadian, D. Vincent Baker, Meguey Baker, Wolfgang Baur, Emily Care Boss, Walt Ciechanowski, Stacy Dellorfano, Jess Hartley, Kenneth Hite, Jennell Jaquays, Eloy Lasanta, Robin D. Laws, Michelle Lyons-McFarland, Don Mappin, Scott Martin, Alex Mayo, Jason Morningstar, Martin Ralya, Kurt Schneider, Ken St. Andre, Monica Valentinelli, Phil Vecchione, and Filamena Young.

Running the gamut from old-school to indie, and featuring tips specifically for game masters as well as techniques any gamer can use to master the art of improvisation, Unframed has you covered. Whether you want to create a social sandbox, get better at doing voices, or harness the power of “yes, and,” you’ll find the improv advice you’re after in Unframed.

Like all Engine Publishing books, Unframed includes four versions of the book: DRM-free, bookmarked, hyperlinked PDF plus EPUB, MOBI, and plain text.

I'm not sure which kindle you tested your mobi version on, but with the Paperwhite 2, not only does Amazon kick it back, but even copying it directly it is unreadable. I had to reconvert it and it works fine. Might want to check again on the conversion.

I'm sorry you had to reconvert the file. We'll take another look at it.

I've been one of the Kindle testers for our past two books, and my 2013 Paperwhite has done fine with our Kindle files. We generally test on two different Kindles.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
