Battle Maps FANTASY: The Homestead

Overview:  It is Stoneworker Cartography's 1 year anniversary!  As a gift to customers of RPGNow and DriveThruRPG, we present this free battle map and associated VTT maps!  Thanks to everyone for giving us such an enthusiastic and warm welcome during our first year.

This map is inspired by scenario from a campaign I once ran.  It is a homestead, where the residents were charged with protecting a pair of bridges in case the nation's walls were ever breached and an enemy was marching on the capital.  Should an enemy breach the nation's walls, it was the job of these homesteaders to bring what were the only two bridges within a hundred leagues down, thereby delaying the enemy from advancing any further, and giving the defenders time to rally and hopefully push the invaders back.

There are two trebuchet's placed on either side of the bridge.  There is also a pair of towers and a gate that has been neglected throughout the years.  It has a portcullis, but the portcullis is rusted shut.

In my game, the players were faced with an epic end of chapter battle where they were charged with destroying at least one bridge before the bulk of an invading army arrived.  At the same time, enemies that were hiding in the brush around the homestead attacked.  So not only did my players have to fire the trebuchets and attempt to bring the bridges down, but their guards had to protect the trebuchets and their operators from being destroyed at the same time.

And with every passing turn that those bridges didn't fall, the army advanced, until it reached a point where soldiers began to cross.  In the end, the bridges fell, but not before enemy soldiers began to cross and had to be dealt with to bring an end to a tense fight.

  • 120" x 120" in size.  10' x 10' if you printed out the entire map!
  • HEX and SQUARE grids for each type of map listed below, as well as a NO GRID version for people that prefer to set their own scale.  Grid sizes are 1" = 5' of gaming space.
  • Full Color Version – This is a printer intensive, full color version of this map.
  • Black and White version – A black and white version, meant to be the least printer intensive.
  • Daytime lighting complete with shadows to give the map depth.
  • SEASONS! - This map comes in two different seasons to fit whatever time of year your game is set in.  The grassy map is set in summer, while the snowy map is set in the deepest part of winter.
  • VTT Maps - 2 different VTT maps representing the different seasons, sized for use with any virtual table top software.
  • PRINT KEY - Lets face it, 10' x 10' is to big for any gaming table.  The beauty of Stoneworker Cartography maps are that you can print out smaller sections of the larger map and use just the area that the battle is taking place in.  Use this key to help you figure out exactly which pages to print and tape together!

Great work! Thanks for the free map, which is massive, and very pretty, with lots of versions. Wonderful. I will check out more of your work. Worth paying for.

Thanks for the nice map. Question: can you include jpg files of the maps (perhaps broken up into 4-6 jpgs?) It will make printing much easier. Thank you!

Sorry if I was unclear; thank you for including the vtt (JPG) of the map with the grid. I want to ask if you can include the hex and also the no grid/no hex vtt jpg? THANK YOU!

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the comments. I'm a bit busy with real life things at the moment, but when I have a little free time I'll create the other versions of the VTT map for you. Look for it in the coming days.

Having just opened this, I'm gobsmacked. This is amazing, gorgeous, and ... massive.

Quite a 'homestead'. The compound, bridge, trebuchet platforms, and defensive island towers suggest a moderately wealthy lordling holding a strategic location for his liege lord.

Now, I wonder how this would look as wallpaper.

The only point I would prefer rendered differently would be the repetitive patterning in the water when viewed as a complete image - or wider angle. That said, this will not be obvious in game applications, and the water texture when viewed at the level of a single sheet, shows luscious depth and texture.

For this quality, Stoneworker Carto has good prices. Not only would I recommend the maps, I'm tempted to get some I would never play on simply for the pleasure of immersing myself in the rich and detailed presentation.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
