Combat Description Cards (Over 700 System Neutral Ways to Describe Combat on 120 Cards)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Over 700 System Neutral Ways to Describe Combat Strikes.

Too often we see combat being run with just a hit/don't hit binary, plus damage. With these cards, you can infuse combat with story.

Three decks are included, organized by Weapon Types, Blunt, Slashing and Piercing.

Combat Description Cards

This storytelling tool:

•Encourages writers to show the effects of strikes, not just say it was painful.

•Adds depth and drama to any of your story's combat scenes.

•Is great for Gamemasters who wish to better express their players' hits, damage or injury.

* Players can have cards that describe their character's combat style the best.

•Can tip your essay, blog, novel or gaming table from good to great!

•Is written for any genre.

•By design, is system neutral and super flexible.

•Is both a reference and a brainstorming tool.

•Offers fresh ways to describe death blows.

•Includes a collage of beautiful card art from Rafael Dorsz.

Basic Instructions :

1) Choose from the below categories, a suite of cards that best match the type of damage your character inflicts:

BLUNT: Damaged caused by non-penetrating force.

SLASHING: Damaged caused by a sharp edge.

PIERCING: Damaged caused by a sharp point.

2) Choose one of the styles below, based on the style of combat being performed:

FINESSE: A character who fights with style and grace, like a Swashbuckler or Martial Artist.

POWER: A character who fight is based on strength and vigor, such as the Barbarian or Thug.

RANGE: A character who is using a thrown or distance weapons such as a javelin or bow.

The Action Word and Card Stacking: You can select one or multiple action words to describe your attack. For example, 1 card could provide a ‘Stylish’ attack while 2 could provide a ‘Stylish’ and ‘Deceptive’ attack.  Draw as many cards as you like and use action words provided to enhance your description.

Finally, each action word contains two descriptions to serve as examples. There are one non-deadly description and one killing blow description (skull). Use them as written or modify them to best fit.

After reading some of the cards I look forward to using them in a game. One negative note, I am disappointed the PDF did not include the Basic Instructions. A simple thing to help with the use of the cards as a reminder. I tried adding it to the PDF but it was locked. The creator should consider adding it to the PDF for future purchases.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
