Updated April 2015!

Now expanded to 144 pages, the game includes over 30 additional monsters, more art, appendices for mass combat, minor character archetypes, character callings, nature magic, and edits throughout to tighten up the presentation and clarify rules, this game is a lean, mean fighting machine straight out of 1981!

Saga of the Splintered Realm is more than just a retro-clone. It is a modernization and re-mix of B/X rules with helpings of modern sensibilities throughout. This simple, fast, clean and intuitive ruleset keeps the best of all editions, evoking the flavor of 1981.

Thanks to the backers of the successful Kickstarter, the core rules are now available as a pay what you want download. One additional volume: The Campaign Guide, will be released later this year, along with print editions of both books.

The pdf appears to be corrupted. I tried downloading it again and now whenever I do it tells me it is corrupt.

Hmmm... I just downloaded it and it seems to work fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. Drop me an email at mtdesing @ roadrunner dot com and I should be able to send you a copy of the pdf directly.

I would like to print out a copy for myself and use my comb binding machine to bind it. Is the cover file available for printing?

If anyone else was curious about these spell durations, Mr. Desing was kind enough to answer my questions over on the G+ community site for this game. I don't want to quote him, so check it out for yourself.

Do you mind sharing now that G+ is no longer a thing?

All are 1 turn.

Ok, so I notice there are no durations listed for the cleric spells Silence, Resist Fire/Cold, or Blade Barrier. I would assume 1 turn would suffice for Silence and Blade Barrier, but what about Resist?

Hi. I really like your rules system for this and Shards of Tomorrow. I plan on writing reviews for both once I am done reading them completely. Is there a separate character sheet for either available on it's own? In the book the footer is present on the character sheet and I'd prefer to print it without. Great game! I'm going to try it out with my family this weekend. I had planned on running another fantasy rpg but yours made me change my mind.

Paul,

Sorry, but I just now saw your comment. I have some character sheets up on the splintered realm google+ community.

Here's a link:

I'm pretty impressed so far. The strictly black and white presentation is slick. To get a real feel for it though I'm considering getting a print-shop edition. What is the recommended print size? It looks A5, am I right?

Thanks! I made sure that the artists understood that we were going for stark black and white, since I knew the art would have to do a lot with a little. I'm so proud of the work the various illustrators did. They really class up the presentation quite a bit.

I'll be publishing this at 6"x9" size in a few months. I haven't worked up a high-rez cover yet, though... sorry.

Sorry! There is a new text box on page 50 - I had left out the small sidebar for death/dying/recovering hit points.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
