D6xD6 RPG Core Book

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

From Origins award winning designer Lester Smith. With former Dragon Magazine editor Dale A. Donovan.

  • Five-minute character creation.
  • Quick-and-easy tactical combat rules.
  • Endless setting possibilities.

The D6xD6 role-playing game is centered on a single stat, Focus. The more skills you choose, the higher your character's Focus number. Choose just a few skills, and your character is very focused. Choose many, and your character becomes a jack-of-all-trades.

Task rolls are 1d6 x 1d6. Roll high for things you know well; low for things you don't. That single roll serves as both level of success and turn order, making combat quick and easy.

This 72-page core book contains all the game rules, plus five sample settings, each of which adds a new layer of character abilities specific to that world:

  • L’Académie des Arcanes: “In a modern world secretly threatened by fée magic, one nation dares to guard the doorway between realms and police the supernatural. Do you have what it takes to join them?” Includes formulas for designing your own magic spells.
  • Blood Type: “When a biotech company’s virus reaches the general populace, horrific results ensue, based on each person’s blood type.” Includes rules for enhanced strength, speed, and senses, based on blood type, and at the cost of blood frenzy.
  • Ghost of a Chance: “Adventure as the spirits of people who have died before their appointed time.” Includes ghostly powers, and ghostly frailties.
  • The World of Esfah: Play characters in the war-torn high fantasy world of the Origins-award-winning Dragon Dice game, with options to use actual Dragon Dice.
  • The World of Zero: In the telepathically linked underground hive of Queen Zero, free thinking cannot be tolerated, which makes your character a target for termination.

New settings are continually being added—based on the licensed worlds of popular authors. And the game is easily adaptable to whatever genre you please.

Masquerade Macabre
(26 pages, on sale at DriveThruRPG) is meant to be played as a party game. I did not play it that way. It comes with a tarot card chart, so I used this product as my solo engine and its theme for an adventure. The RPG system that I used was the D6xD6 RPG Core Book. I created six characters. The year is 1938 and the PCs are invited to a free dinner party. As the PCs enter the mansion from the front, the cooks exit from the back. The PCs see the butler first. After they are seated at the table, they see the maid and she says, “Dinner is served.” She is not wearing a maid’s outfit. See the attached image (MidJourney AI art). The food is great. Halfway through the dinner, Red (she has red hair) goes upstairs to use the washroom. She never comes back down and the PCs suspect foul play. In the kitchen, the Colonel (wears a yellow shirt) picks up a chef knife and finds a note addressed to him. It is from his girlfriend who went MIA a year ago. The note says, “Meet me in the attic. Alone”....See more

Hi, Łukasz. Thanks for the question. Our Kickstarter backers will receive their Expanded Book PDF sometime this week, and print proofs will be ordered by end of week. Public release will be shortly after that. We'll post more news soon. Cheers!

Bought this on a lark, and so far I am very impressed with how 'dense' this is in terms of what you get for each mechanic.

I will probably be throwing this at my players for an 'Aliens' scenario in a few weeks and see how it goes.

Thank you all for your comments, suggestions, and reviews.

As a part-time, family-owned, small-press operation with a very full production schedule, we cannot always respond to each, but we do read and carefully consider every one.

At the moment, for example, we are hard at work on the expanded edition of this game, but we have been discussing with the DriveThruRPG staff the topic of "printer friendly" PDFs. So far, no options have come up that would avoid maintaining multiple versions of the same files (which complicates any changes or corrections). We'll keep exploring as time permits, however.

Sincerely,

Lester Smith

One possibility is to use pdf layers - you can separate out the images on to layers which can be toggled on or off for printing purposes. Only one version of the file is needed this way.
This method seems to be quite popular on DriveThruRPG - Pinnacle uses this method for its Savage Worlds books for example.

Even just being able to have a white background with no dark border would be great. I'd like to keep the artwork in it.

You know, 16 reviews later (full of lambasting), I have to say this: there are much-better game systems out there that do what D6xD6 does. If you want the same game, albeit a different dice-rolling mechanic, for 3 more dollars expense -- be my guest. I will stick with the tried-n-true games I have already purchased, games that do a much-better job of fleshing out the characters and the story, with detailed support to-boot. -- Kickstarters should not be allowed to review products that they are BIASED towards: you won't get an honest review from them. You will note -- I was the first to review this product. I wanted to read 3 to 5 reviews before buying it. I bit the bullet - paid the $3 - I didn't like it. THEN, oh, then: all these reviews FLOOD in. Where were you before I spent money? That is the issue: I don't think it's worth the money. Spend your money - review the products - this helps many other people out a lot.

Your opinion is fair from your perspective. I don't think our reviews were biased. We paid our money too, and we did so before the final product was completed. For my part, I read the finished book for the first time and took notes, specifically for this review. While I have not played the game yet, I plan to as soon as I'm able. While you and I disagree about the rules being useful, I was honestly surprised by your critique of the layout and typesetting. After reading your review I expected a hot mess but didn't see it.

Perhaps this comes down to expectations. I knew, based on the KS campaign, what the rules were going to be like and that they would be on the light side. Perhaps you came to the review with a much different set of expectations and found the finished product lacking. In any case, your review is available along with everyone elses and any future customer can read and compare. The KS backers all tagged themselves as such, and those of us who haven't played the game yet, reported that...See more

Hi. Is there a printer friendly version of this book? I do read rpgs on my iPad but I like printing them off for creating characters. The dark border around the pages are what are stopping me from purchasing this rpg. A lot of publishers do offer printer friendly versions as well in the purchase.

In my experience printing character sheets at somewhere like Officeworks would be a solution. They tend to charge a flat rate, ignoring ink costs. If you're printing out enough it might actually be easier.

Thanks for the advice David. I appreciate it! I'll have to try to find a place like that around here. I would like to print the whole book too.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
