A dwarven princess on a quest to reclaim her throne.

A brave but dim warrior who decides to become a wizard after finding a wand with a mind of its own.

A talking monkey with a magical bubble pipe who searches for the banana of gold.

You can tell all of these stories and many more when you play Abstract Dungeon. Abstract Dungeon is quick and simple roleplaying game built around a resource spending mechanic. It gives you control over whether and how your character overcome obstacles in your path. The question is not whether you make your roll, but whether you are willing to pay the price.

The biggest difference between Abstract Dungeon and other roleplaying games is that you roll your all your dice at the start or the adventure, then spend your dice to overcome challenges. You can always win, provided you are willing to spend the resources.

You then need to describe how you overcame the challenge based on the source of the die you spent. If you spend a die from your Toughness pool, it could represent anything from punching a goblin in the face to holding your liquor, while spending a die from Intellect could represent casting a spell or presenting a logical argument.

The Abstract Dungeon core rulebook contains everything you need to play including:

  • Character creation
  • Rules to play
  • GM advice
  • Optional rules
  • Magic items
  • Monsters
  • Morvan's Hollow, a sample setting
  • Three sample adventures: The Forest Dark, The Broken Tower, and The Orcish Baker.

Played it a ton back in beta, and had a ton of fun with it. Still holds up, but I have a few minor complaints.
For one, there isn't too much that's different from the beta version, so the price tag does seem a tad excessive.
And while this might be a nitpick, the front cover is DREADFUL compared to the rest of the art in the book itself.
Overall, nice and easy game, but a lot of homebrew required for extended/more serious play.

Hi !

I read the free "work in progress" version of Abstract Dungeon and really apreciate it. It's trully a great game.

But what is the difference between the last beta and the paid version ?

By the way, I think your deserve my money. Honestly.
But I am curious too :)

Thanks for the kind words.

In terms of changes, there's a few tweaks to the rules, but most of it is some added content. The GM's section has been expanded and divided up, so there's a section about the GMing in general, how to run games of Abstract Dungeon in particular, and lots of optional rules.

Plus there's also a sample setting and a third adventure.

Aw shucks. The links from 1/14/15's 2235 email do not link to, as the email promised, "the rules and cards as bundle to save on both."

This sort of thing (missing links or wandering links) seems to happen a lot on DriveThruRPGnow. Could it be that they've made their cataloging tools a bit too difficult or even clunky?

That's my fault, I forgot to activate the bundle. It should work now: http://www.rpgnow.com/product/142886/Abstract-Dungeon-Rules-and-Cards-BUNDLE

I really like the idea of this game. I'm on the edge with this one. Just a bit more information about it would help make my decision. Videos are pretty good at showing the system. Is there no website for the company?

Hi Paul,

Our website got hacked a little bit ago, and it's just coming back online now, though it still needs some work and I'll be updating it over the week. (http://www.sneakattackpress.com/products/abstractdungeon/)

Is there any particular information about it that you are looking for?

Hi Matthew. Thanks for the response. Too bad about the website. I like what I've seen of the system. The "let's play" video was good at explaining things. For some reason I just feel like I need to know more about it. Sitting here I'm trying to think about what I really would want to know. Leveling up maybe? Drawing a blank right now as I have to go out right now. In a nutshell I'm looking for a rpg to play with my kids and this one is looking really good for that.

I'm pretty sure I'll be picking this up. Will this game be supported with more books?

As characters level up they get more dice. This let's them adventure longer and also gives them more opportunities to use multiple dice in a single turn (which is a big help).

Yes we'll be putting out more books. We've got a couple of short pdfs with new Traits, monsters, and magic items coming up soon. I'm also working on a longer adventure for it called "Castle Blud and the Land Beyond the Wall."

Thanks again. I just purchased your game as you were nice enough to reply. That goes a long way with me. I haven't had a chance to really browse through it yet but I'm sure I will like it a lot. A quick look and I'm impressed. Looking forward to seeing more come out for it. Thank you for keeping it printer friendly. B/W with some artwork. One colour map.

Great! I hope you enjoy it. (If you want to make it even more printer friendly, you can use layers to turn off pictures and maps.)

A 144-page book . . . and only a ONE-page preview? And it's just a table, nothing about how the game is played, the tone, the setting, etc.

I realize you've posted a video -- though it only covers character creation, nothing more -- but that doesn't give me a look at the book itself. I need to see the writing, the layout, the tone, etc., for myself. Watching a video of you guys just tells me that YOU like this book. I can't judge whether I'LL like it unless I can see it. So please post a better preview. Thanks in advance.

It looks like the preview was generating from the character generation sheet, which I included as a seperate pdf for convenience. I think I've fixed it so that it comes from the main book now.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
