OUTLAWS OF OUTER SPACE!

Falsely accused of piracy and murder, Robin, Malo, and their leader Tara fight injustice everywhere they find it throughout the solar system while staying one step ahead of corrupt officials of oppressive governments.

Tara: Marauder of the Spacelanes, created by Gene Fawcette, is retro sci-fi comics at their finest, augmented by roleplaying game material--a complete battle scenario for ROLF!: The Rollplaying Game; and statistics for Atom Swords in the OGL d20 and OpenD6 game systems. The collection also features a fiction vignette detailing the never-before-revealed circumstances under which Tara and her crew became outlaws.

Sadly, this does not include Tara's first appearance in Wonder Comics #15 (which reveals and details the never-before-revealed circumstances under which Tara and her crew became outlaws) but otherwise a fine entry in the series. Good b&w reproduction of some hard-to-reproduce art, especially that splash page from Wonder #16.

There was an origin story? L.L. Hundal (who put this book together) says there wasn't. Her claim is backed up by the a couple websites that state that the Tara story in issues #15 and #16 were the same one. As far as I know, that is the story that starts this book. (I confess that the fiction piece and the ROLF! battle scenario were based on the comics that are included in the book were based on the Tara stories that Hundal sent along, so for all I know, the "never revealed origin" is actually the "new origin." Hundal is usually pretty reliable when it comes to details like "no origin story exists," but I suppose it's possible we made a mistake in this case.)

Thanks for commenting, though. It's nice to know someone is out there. :)

You'd have to go back pretty far in my dusty old memory, but I remember glancing through Wonder #15 at one of Ed Murray's backyard swap meets of the mid-to-early 1970s. Didn't buy it (for $1) because there were issues of Marvel Family available for $1 each.

If it weren't for that striking and classic cover (missing only a buzzsaw to make a perfect sf version of a Pearl White serial!) I'd probably not remember it at all. Sadly, the cover wasn't Tara (it was a Wonderman cover) but could have passed for Tara. I recall the Tara story being further in, and the splash page showing her facing the reader in a dynamic full-body pose. I think GCBD shows #15's Tara story being a different length than #16's.

Part of the problem is that, early on, an issue of Wonder 16 was identified as #15, and that was the scanned version going around for so long. There's a short, but interesting discussion on the CB+ forum which shows how, even today, there remain mysteries of Golden Age titles that may never...See more

The pages of Wonder Comics 15 can be seen on this site: http://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=61795

It looks like the whole Wonder Comics series is available there, as well, in color.

I'll have to let Hundal know she was wrong. Thanks for the head's up.

(BTW... I still think I like my backstory better. :) )

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
