Is it possible to get a PDF preview?

nevermind. I reached out directly and understand why there is no preview.
As a side note, there are a couple of youtube reviews that really help understand what's in the book.
For $10, this is a good deal.

Buy Fantasy Hero, NOT Complete.

Fantasy Hero has over double the page count (480 pp). It still expects that you have Rulebooks #1 and #2 (Characters/Options) but those can be referenced in pdf.
It also has STEVE LONG's name on the cover.

Honestly if you really want Fantasy Hero "Complete" [as a GM] plan on buying in any format:
Books 1 and 2
Fantasy Hero
Bestiary
Grimoire

[The above are not really optional, but they can be pdf]
[The following are optional but recommended, again pdf is fine]
Skills
Equipment
Martial Arts for weapon styles and so forth

I think I've bought all of those here except Martial Arts (I'm passing on that for my campaign).

If your players have never played HERO before, the Basic Rulebook is super useful, just don't make them read the whole thing.

you could with some difficulty, or sourcing some conversion documents from 4e to 6e as Robin Hood was for 4e

I purchased this from the HERO game store and have loved it! It is true that you already need to be familiar with the 6e HERO system (Vol. 1 & 2) to get the most of this collection.

That said, the Grischun setting is intriguing and unique. The book outlines the ruling structure, nature of magic, and cultural histories of the different races. It has zero history for individual cities or the personalities/histories of citizens/rulers. It is simply a setting which must be populated either by the GM or supplements. In my case, I had the players choose a city on the map and write its history, which was incorporated from their backstory.

I am very, very pleased with what I got but I agree with other commenters in that it is more of a 'supplement' than a 'complete' collection.

Am I blind, or the Damage Class Table is really missing from this book?

4 years later, but yes it's missing. It's still playable but you have to work it out or go on the forums if neccessary

How much damage does a sword do in this system - book gives no clue. How much protection does a leather jerkin offer - nothing in the book. In what way is this product "Complete"?

I agree this was a disappointing product. Hero Games has fallen a long way in recent years. The system itself is excellent at its core. But it needs to be presented much, much better.

(Note: I backed the Kickstarter, so will not show as a purchaser here)

If you check pages 248 and 249 you'll find armor and weapon values.

I just read your review. I'm not sure what order you read the book in, but you stated that terms are used before they are defined. Of the 4 you listed, the first 3 are used first in the section that defines them (Killing Attack for HKA and RKA, and Focus for OIF). I did note DNPC shows up as an example in a general discussion of Complications before the specific listing.

For anyone else reading this, I'll also note that these terms also appear in the Index in the back of the book so that you see what it is and what page number to go to.

Your confirmation that the main rule books are much much better than this, are very useful david, thanks very much. I will pick up the full rules plus Fantasy Hero 6e once I have the funds!

I took the plunge and bought the main 6E rulebooks direct from the Hero games webstore. They are really good and very much recommended.

Lots of good gaming there! And you will enjoy Fantasy Hero 6E too if you get around to it. Steve Long has the same taste as me in fantasy and loads up with Jack Vance quotes...the book is actually fun to read by itself.

Does this product require the full Hero System rule book, or is it a stand alone product?

Beauty. Thanks, Andrew. I've been curious about Fantasy Hero for a long time, but the size of the main Hero System rule book is a little intimidating.

Then you should find this book very useful, as it condenses the rules down into a more manageable size.

This book sucks unless you already know how to play the Hero System.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
