Reviews for Valor

"The production value is good, it has an "anime" feel to it that [is] commercially viable these days, and I think your particular take on finding a middle ground between "indy" storytelling and "trad" rpg game design is a valid and playable one."

About what Brandon P asked, the errata should be either uploaded to drivethrurpg as a pdf, or placed here in the Discussions section or, preferably, incorporated to the pdf.

When will the errata 1) be available in pdf and 2) incorporated into the core book pdf? Thanks in advance!

Hi Brandon, were there major corrections in the errata? Also, is the errata still available somewhere?

To my knowledge, the errata is only available from the publisher's website. Here is a link:

Thanks! I didn't see this reply earlier, I thought drivethrurpg would notify me, haha.

I've read through the preview and it sounds pretty cool so far. Are there any examples of the Techniques anywhere? It sounds like they are the core of the system, but there aren't any examples given in the preview.

I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I did a thing where I broke down character creation in it using Batman as an example:

After reading the review, it made things clearer to me what this game is about. This is a good thing, and it probably helped sales overall when first written. That has been the goal: to get a fair market advertised for a fair price. Unfortunately, the product is still too high of a cost for me to purchase, but I do see the efforts and appreciate the mark-down since my last comment. I am just of the opinion that when the price lowers to it's perceived value, then more sales will be forth-coming - including my purchase. Simple economics to me. Meanwhile, we are starting a new game of Ova next week....

FYI, this title is October 27, 2016's Deal of the Day, and is 70% off the PDF price for 24 hours, in case you still hadn't bought it because of its MSRP/PDF prices.
MSRP: $30.00
Sale price: $25.00
Deal price: $7.50 (70% off)

I will never understand how people can write stuff like this and not see it as rude.

I'll put the review in both locations. I can't access rpg.net where I am right now so it'll have to wait till this evening.
I still have some trouble with the 5 star system here as it feels like anything less than 5 is saying you didn't like the game. For me I would feel that 3 and up should be a buy it now while anything less is a maybe. Oh well.

Just as a reminder: the expense of this product does not correlate well with the perceived value. There are two other similar RPG core books with an anime theme that are an average 30% cheaper than this product. I predict that Valor sales will continue to stagnate unless they lower the price a few dollars more. Remember - a bird in-hand is worth two in the bush.

Well I can vouch that it is a well made game perfect for running a dbz themed game. Once they fix some small issues like allowing others to add bookmarks it will be a great product for its price.
At the moment it does suffer from a lack of reviews or even people talking about it. I suppose ill have to try and write up a decent review shortly.

There are currently 0 reviews at drivethrurpg.com / rpgnow.com for Valor RPG, since this comment is also on drivethru under the game in question, it is here where what I said applies. I don't know about "it does not suffer from a lack of reviews" because there are no reviews here, where this comment exists. I am not searching all over the web for some obscure review; people who bought the product, like you, should write a review to help the game. PS - small issues will kill sales if the price is steep, keep that in mind.

I'm assuming this was your attempt at a polite way of reminding me to get off my butt and actually write a review. I'll try to make that a priority today once I'm done with work. Too be quite honest I'd completely forgotten till I got the email update telling me someone commented on something.

I would like to know where you got your quote from though? After all it seems like you may have misread what I said about "it does suffer from a lack of reviews".

I would like to warn anyone purchasing this that they have no bookmarks set up and it is locked so you can't add bookmarks. I sent them a message about this but have received no reply so far.
It's a bit disappointing seeing as they charge what seems like a high price but didn't add any of the features that makes digital products so nice.

Hi David. I'm sorry you haven't received a reply. A question like this came to us a few days ago and we answered it, but I'm not sure if this is you or not.

To address your concerns: Bookmarks are something that we are currently looking into adding, as well as including hyperlinks, lifting the copy and paste restriction, and further optimizing the PDF so that pages load faster. We hope to be able to roll out these changes with a few errata additions shortly!

So, are these updates ever coming? I almost recommended this to someone today, but I couldn't bring myself to do so because of these issues especially at the current price point.

I'm going to guess not. This long to put in bookmarks and remove the copy paste block is too long. I don't think I'll be bothering with these folks in the future.
The game is interesting but the pdf is a pain to use at the table thanks to the lack of basic pdf functions.

Well I've finally come back to look at this again. So now I've downloaded the preview and it's made me interested. The 30$ price point is still off putting and the "Copy/paste disabled" is even more so. I still don't quite see how it's going to handle special techniques or spells and that's kind of the last bit I need to know before I could take such an expensive plunge.

I've been looking all over for any reviews or play experience reports and I've yet to find a single one. If anyone here could point me towards one it would be much appreciated.

Valor player here, and been so since the playtest days. I can't put up a formal review since I got the game through Kickstarter rather than here, but I can tell you that I love this game a great deal due to flexibility more than anything. It's not quite to Fate levels of abstraction, but if you like a game where you can make up whatever character you like or run a game in whatever setting you like while still having crunchy enough rules to play it on a battlemat, it's a really good purchase.

Without ruining the point of buying the book, Techniques (which can be anything from wrestling moves to spells to weapons to lengthy political diatribes that happen to reduce your target's resolve) are built similarly to other point-based systems like Mutants & Masterminds, although with much more general and less fiddly "base powers" than that example. You have a Core that you take X levels in (up to a max per Technique/total based on your character level) and then modify it with an extremely wide...See more

I've been waiting on a review like this that gave me some insight into the game. The lower price was a decent selling point too I will admit.
I still wish developers wouldn't do things like prevent copy and pasting though as it makes my cheat sheets far more annoying to make.

I'm finding it hard to see much discussion about this game. It looks interesting but at 30$ it's a bit steep for not knowing anything but the art looks good to me. That and why is copy and paste disabled?

Any reviews or group play write ups I might look at to learn more?

$30 for a .pdf is pretty steep; even Shadowrun's .pdfs are about $20-$25 which is pricey in comparison to most RPG .pdfs. It was a Kickstarter, and so I can see not wanting to sell it cheaper than the backers got it, but jeebus, that price point.

There's a discussion here - http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?408108-Valor-Tabletop-RPG-System - hopefully that answers some of your questions?

I'm curious about this for sure, but that price tag's a major disincentive to exploring.

I definitely think I would have just bought it at 20$ instead of trying to research it.

I noticed they mentioned something about meters in that thread you linked though I'm not sure what those are. Apparently it's a subsystem that's nifty in some way?

Ah well there is too little information on it at the moment for me to take that plunge. I'll just add it to my wishlist so I'll remember to check on it again sometime in the future.
Thanks for the link.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
