The Swashbuckler - A Dungeon World Playbook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

There’s no shortage of individuals that strike out in search of gold and glory. Most aren’t particularly concerned with how they get it: the important thing is that they get it, and they survive long enough to enjoy basking in fame and fortune.

Not you.

Yeah you want both, but you want to earn them in style. It’s not enough to merely slay the dragon and get the gold, possibly even fame. There’s gotta be a chase, a cleverly sprung trap, a narrowly-avoided demise—something for you and the other survivors to boast about when they limp back home.

Through sword and wit, loathsome monsters, dastardly villains, and even your companions will bear witness to your deeds. They’ll spread your name through fearful whispers and boisterous tales.

This product contains two separate pdf files. The first is a digest-sized, 23 page book laid out like the Dungeon World rulebook. It includes:

  • The Swashbuckler, a complete class with 20 advanced moves: improve your fighting technique, goad enemies into fighting you, attract a sidekick, and more!
  • New equipment like parrying dagger and buckler, as well as some firearms if your campaign features them.
  • Two new magic items, including an artifact: do what it wants, and it'll become more powerful!
  • Seven moves that just didn't quite make the initial cut.
  • A kind of behind the scenes look at some of the fiction and other content.

The other is a 2-page, letter-sized character sheet for you to print out and actually use at the table. It features a new layout that provides more room for gear and alternate moves than the "official" Dungeon World character sheets.

Hi, the alternate font character sheet has a typo - it says Advanced Moves (levels 6-10), where it should say 2-5. Apart from that, looks good.

I see there are a number of DW playbooks which are included in "A Sundered World" bundle. As an owner of ASW, I'm curious as to how well they mesh with the ASW setting *thematically*, as they appear to be standard Dungeon World playbooks...

During the ASW kickstarter some people wanted us to add The Pirate and a few other things to the book, but we didn't want backers to pay for content they already had, so we made a bundle to better accommodate them.

While most any class would work in the setting just fine (GM and/or players might need to tweak some lore/flavor things), the classes in that bundle are especially thematic/classes people kept asking about: pirate and swashbuckler because you have magic ships and can easily do a campaign in the vein of something like Treasure Planet, druid because of nature spirits (but something different from the shaman), psion because the battlemind and nomad are also psychic classes, and cultist because of the corpse stars and star cults.

Most of our classes use backgrounds instead of race, so you don't have to change anything for them. The only classes that would require some extra oomph are the monstrous ones (dragon, golem, jinni, troll, etc) since ASW lets you tack on a race move in...See more

Any possibility of getting a standard character sheet for the Swashbuckler? Or one of the themed variations of a standard sheet like those you've done on the Psion and Pirate?

John,

Lemme see if I can fit all the moves onto the standard sheet (which, if possible, will definitely be themed).

I'm curious how this class compares and contrasts with The Awful Good Pirate. Is there a comparison written up somewhere.

I imagine we'll want both, but it would be great to see something about this in the product description.

Sorry for the delay on this, John (it would be nice to get Discussion alerts via email). The short of it is that if you had two players, one a pirate and the other a swasbuckler, there'd be a bit of overlap, but they'd still play differently (and as they leveled up this difference would grow).

By default, the pirate is better suited to a "pirate" campaign, fighting dirty, and finding treasure, and the swashbuckler is more about being resourceful, being awesome with a sword (or quarterstaff), and fighting people one-on-one.

As you level up, Pirates can know more about the ocean and get better at killing monsters that live there, finding treasure, and recruiting hirelings and working with them. Also a few ways to get better with a sword, including a sword-firearm attack combo, and using firearms and grenades without accidentally blowing themselves up.

Swashbuckler is more focused on its core concept, but you can modify the Defend basic move, gain a trusty sidekick,...See more

Thanks! This is very helpful.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
