The GameMaster's Apprentice: Demon Hunters is a system-neutral deck of cards that can be used as either a supplement for The Dead Gentlemen's RPG, Demon Hunters: A Comedy of Terrors, or as a complete game engine for GM-free solo or group RPGs set in that same world.

You can view the cards' complete instructions for free by clicking the preview link beneath the thumbnail above, or view the Quickstart Guide and a set of quick-reference PnP/PoD Instruction Cards here on DriveThru if you prefer (if you wish to purchase the Print on Demand instruction cards to keep with your deck, be sure to combine the order with the deck itself! They are only six cards, and DriveThru will not print orders that small). You can also scroll down to view the card overview image and watch a video of the cards in use!

On each card is a set of fourteen individual randomizers; with 60 double-sided cards, you can generate literally millions of possible adventures, all without having to hunt through a book or PDF for a single table!

With these cards, you can:

  • Instantly generate NPCs with randomized names, motivations, and backgrounds.

  • Create random events or story seeds.

  • Provide sensory details or random loot for characters searching or stealing.

  • Run games without a human GameMaster!

And more--they even work brilliantly as creative writing prompt generators, and have been playtested by 9th-12th grade students of both English and Game Design.

If you want specifics, including examples of how to use the randomizers on the cards, the complete instructions are available in the downloadable PDF preview linked below the cover image/thumbnail, but you can take a look at the overview below to see the quick and dirty version of what is on each card, and you can view a video preview from the original Kickstarter that (using the base, genre-neutral deck) explains how to use the cards to run a GM-free game or generate a story for a traditional RPG. This video is the second in a series, so if you want to see the first (which details initial generation of the story), check out our website, www.LarcenousDesigns.com!

Card Overview

These cards were created with the support of over 360 individuals on Kickstarter, and would not exist in their current form otherwise! Thank you!

I noticed that the symbols in the top right are different in some of the decks (like this one) than the Norse Runes in the reference card set. Any chance of getting reference card sets with the other symbols? Or at least the cards with the symbol definitions.

I know these are described in the PDFs included in the purchase, but the reference cards are just more convenient.

That makes sense to me! We are going to be upgrading a lot of content over the next year, so I’ll add that to the list!

Hmmm... There's an actual chance that we will, in the not too distant future! No guarantees yet, but watch out for announcements from me through DriveThrough or my Larcenous Designs Facebook group!

I have many of your decks in print and PDF already and enjoy them! I use them as part of my regular tabletop RPG game with friends for when I need sudden inspiration, and we even have a steampunk-based game where the campaign leans very heavily on the steampunk deck! But I wanted to second the request for a Post Apocalypse deck as I am getting ready to embark on a solo game effort with Nuked, a post-apocalypse hack of the very light RPG "Knave". Right now I am leaning towards using the Horror deck for this, but a true post-apoc deck would be fantastic! Thanks again for such great stuff!

Hi, Jeffrey G! Thanks for letting me know :-)
I'm currently working on a Cyberpunk version that I hope will hit Kickstarter very soon, and while it certainly isn't the same, it might serve well depending on your flavor of apocalypse, so to speak! A more traditional post apocalypse may indeed be one we can think about in the future, too. Keep an eye out!

Some of the even odds answers in the VTT images are blank. I found this in cards 4, 58, 73, 118, and 120.

That is... a weird error... what? Ok, I see the same thing, but (fortunately) the printed and PnP copies are fine, which is why I didn't catch that.

I'll try and fix it in the near future! We are planning an update of some things that will require me to replace/add new files anyway. Thanks!

Soooo... I don't actually play "Demon Hunters" (although I enjoyed both movies). But I do tend to play a lot of horror games for my solo, actual-play podcast. I plan on giving "In Nomine" a try at some point, but want to run it in more of a comedy-horror style. So would the Horror deck (which I already have, mind you) work fine, or should I grab the Demon Hunters deck? In short, would the DH deck help drive the comedic aspects of the adventure, in addition to the angels v. demons v. hunters 'horror'?

This is definitely a toss up in terms of 'effectiveness,' but the DH deck DOES have a lot more intended-to-be-funny content.

That said, see my reply to your other comment, if you are thinking of expanding a collection of physical decks :-)

Thank you for making such an awesome tool and for making these cards so affordable right now. I picked up Demon Hunters and the Basic Set. It is well worth getting a printed set as the quality is so much better than expected and so much better to use than my little print-and-play set was. The optional plastic deck box is well worth paying for, too, and again, higher quality than I expected. I just want to say I am really loving this purchase and appreciate your dedication to making these available!

Is there a way to get DriveThru to print single sided cards with a GMA back (or frankly even a blank back)?

Not automatically; the best way currently is to self-print on cardstock from the PnP files, but obviously that isn’t the same, and requires a lot more personal work—my apologies.
If you want to put up with me workshopping some ways to get the deck into a format you’d prefer, email me at LarcenousDesigns@gmail.com and I’ll see what I can do!

You do not! Each deck is complete and meant to be used on its own.

I've purchased the basic deck and loved it, very useful for my games! However I'm curious about what kinds of answers "source material" and "specialties" contain, given that they are different categories to the norse runes and elemental symbols on the other cards

Hi! You can get the full details by opening up the instructions (the "publisher preview" link under the thumbnail image), but the short version is that Source Material is there to suggest a source for your new big bad or mysterious power, such as Norse, Greek, or Abrahamic mythology, urban legends, Elder God Mythose, etc, and Specialties has icons that represent social stuff, combat/stealth, magic, and Science!; these can be used to suggest what abilities will be useful in this encounter, or what strengths an NPC has, etc.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
