Chain of Being: the Fantasy RPG of Epic Absurdity - Higher Arc Edition

What would happen if the most ridiculous character you've ever created in a fantasy game became a god?

Chain of Being answers that question with a roleplaying game set in a fantasy world gone haywire. The basic premise of CoB is that the old order of things has been disrupted by a small group of wacky mortals who have taken the heavens by storm and seized the positions of their complacent deities. Ever since then, they've spent most of their time drunk on fermented ambrosia, messing with gameality and making sure that things will never be quite the same...

If you're the sort of person who loves to laugh a lot while roleplaying, Chain of Being is your game. In CoB, all of the traditional denizens of a fantasy realm, like knights and dragons, now have to compete for attention with the likes of aliens, superheroes, mechs, conspiracies, corrupt corporations, insane dungeon designers, people who know that their universe is really just a roleplaying game, and lots of other insanity. CoB is "anything goes" fantastic fiction.

This version of Chain of Being is in Limestone Publishing's house system, Higher Arc. Higher Arc features a mechanic based on ten-sided dice with a hierarchical skill development system, variable levels of success, and a logical and consistent method of resolving actions. Higher Arc is totally customizable, so as to allow players as much or as little rules complexity as they desire. It has no classes or levels, and it allows players maximum control over their characters.

CoB is also available in a d20 version for 3.0 D&D.

An excellent fantasy RPG that parodies all the best (and worst) things about the genre. The system and setting allow the comedy to flow naturally, and the setting provides plenty of opportunity for adventures of all flavors. LIKED: A fun [...]

Worth a look. I especially enjoyed the group that realizes they're in a role-playing game, but doesn't fully understand the implications. The explanation of the Chain of Being itself is not to be missed. LIKED: Very amusing. DISLIK [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
