1.3 changes! After a long time of amassing feedback from the community while this has been in the wild, I made a rather large overhaul to how this class' progression lays out, and how Trick Shots are acquired!

1) All of the various special Shots the Gunslinger can make are now considered "Trick Shots" that can be selected from the list as you level up, similar to the Battle Master. This enables a chance for players to customize the style of their Gunslinger far more based on which trick shots they choose as they progress.

2) I've rebalanced the Trick Shots, making some more useful, and making previous high-level features now available at any level, but balanced for it.

3) Added Bullying Shot as a social trick shot to aid in Intimidation attempts.

4) Clarified that the recovery of Grit based on killing a creature is viable only if the creature is a significant threat (at the DM's discretion).

5) Added the 10th level feature "Rapid Repair" that allows the gunslinger to attempt a repair as a bonus action.

6) Added ammunition costs for each weapon, as well as rules for the cost of crafting ammunition.

7) Removed the Scattergun and Scatter properties (as the design was a little unwieldy), but you are welcome to still use them from the previous itterations!

8) Added a Palm Pistol option as a firearm with the light property (for an off-handed shot).

9) Added a Blunderbuss to the firearm list.

GUNSLINGER

Martial Archetype for Fighters

Most warriors and combat specialists spend their years perfecting the classic arts of swordplay, archery, or polearm tactics. Whether duelist or infantry, martial weapons were seemingly perfected long ago, and the true challenge is to master them.

However, some minds couldn’t stop with the innovation of the crossbow. Experimentation with alchemical components and rare metals have unlocked the secrets of controlled explosive force. The few who survive these trivals of ingenuity may become the first to create, and deftly wield, the first firearms.

This archetype focuses on the ability to design, craft, and utilize powerful, yet dangerous ranged weapons. Through creative innovation and immaculate aim, you become a distant force of death on the battlefield.

Inspired by converting from the Pathfinder class, retooled and altered for 5e and making it more my own, I hope you enjoy.

This may need to escallate "up" a level, but...

I am working with some guys (Combat Vets) who have never played tabletop RPGs. As a "class" they don't "get" RP and have never tried.

I've found that where possible it's best to "run what you brung" so I try to bring new players into games where they can RP "themselves". There are some defunct games where this works well, but it's still hard to port their system to 5e.

I have tried to take the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of these people I know and translate them into a 5e campaign, but run into some significant roadblocks...

Scenario: The Party is on a gear-heavy hunting trip in the "real world". They overnight in a cave. The world they re-enter is now 5e and not "Terran Planar".

They speak no 5e language.

They have ZERO Magic.

They have modern knowledge and skills.

Their backgrounds...See more

Question about reload, it states reload is 1 attack or 1 action. Is it which ever is longer or which ever is shorter? 1 attack if a player has 2+ attacks isn't near as bad as 1 action.

And a request, can we get a version that we can copy and paste into a fillable PDF character sheet?

Question: Isn't violent shot a touch overpowered? if you rack up a few dice with "just a pistol" you can do crazy damage and in a way disrupt an encounter quite easily. Sure the misfire gets up, but things like advantage or Luck feat can really push the dice in the favor of the user. and if it misfires he can just pull a secondary pistol as an attack action next turn only losing one round of damage essentially.
It's a very good risk to take. Say you rack up four grit, that's a misfire of 9. 45%, then say you have advantage from an ambush, or luck, or a spellbuff, and suddenly you have a really good chance of making a real heavy alpha strike. Sure, you won't have much more grit to spend later on of course, unless it's time for a short rest, but it still can be a touch abused pretty early on.

Question for the grand lord himself, or just someone with the answer. Are firearms in a class of their own, or are they simple or martial weapons that require a special trait, or feat, or class feature to use?

Are firearm arms repairs Tinker's Tools (Dexterity) checks or Tinker's Tools (Intelligence)? What about firearm crafting?

From what Matt's said on twitter, Repairs and Crafting are Tinker's Tools (Intelligence) checks. However, ammunition crafting is a DC 10 Tinker's Tools (Dexterity) check on a Long Rest, where if you meet or exceed 10 you make an amount of bullets equal to your roll.

I'd find the tweet but my internet is being weird. Hope this helped!

EDIT: These two tweets aren't the exact tweet I was looking for, but they're relevant nonetheless.

I don't understand the 'explosive' property of the firearms themselves...? It's worded in an unusual manner.

And, can we see the old versions somewhere?

It just means if you hit with that weapon, everything in 5ft of the impact, takes addional 1d8 fire damage (on a failed save)

I love this new version. One of the biggest complaints we saw before was that you didn't get any of the fun shot types until VERY late in your characters career (most games don't even make it to the teens), and they're some of the most enjoyable parts of the class. I'm very glad it now follows a closer progression to the battlemaster and gives you some of the stuff right out of the gate at level 3.

Can you gain proficiency in a firearm from the Weapon Master feat or Gladiator Background or do you have to take three levels into Fighter Gunslinger for them?

I am adding this subclass as an option for a campaign I am starting soon. I am wondering why you chose to tie the number of Grit Points to the characters Wisdom modifier? Also for tinker's checks to repair damaged firearms do you normally do Intelligence or Dexterity for the base ability?

So how does the Light property work on this palm pistol? Because RAW says that the light weapon has to be a melee weapon to be dual wielded.

There is an accompanying feat that will be released in the near future that enables this feature's usefulness (might like the Crossbow Expert)

There's a feat on DND Beyond also from Matt Mercer and "Critical Role", made available at close to the same time, called "Firearm Specialist", which allows wielding a firearm with the *light* quality.

I've been wondering why you chose to make this as a Martial Archetype for Fighters, I feel like it would fit better as it's own class. I'm sure you have very good reasons, so I would like to hear them!

From my standpoint, "using firearms" wasn't a large enough thematic difference to constitute its own class. Mind you, you could totally expand upon it and do so! However, for the purposes of my campaign, it made more sense to design it in the realm of being a Fighter archetype (A class whose mastery of weapons and warfare make them adaptable and dangerous).

Along the same lines, Matt …
Greyhawk has a hero-deity who's infamous for wielding firearms, despite the usual lack of firearms in that setting … although, there are paladins of that deity who use them.
Think alá something like a frontier town marshal, except medieval.
Do you think this subclass would do well for a paladin if it were their Sacred Oath, instead of a fighter's Martial Archetype?

Okay, I'll be keeping an eye out for that in the next book! Follow up question what should these firearms be classified as? Are they martial weapons or simple weapons? Can they/are they intended to be gained through the Weapon Master feat or Gladiator Background?

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
