WARRIORS OF THE RED PLANET is a game of classic pulp, of “Sword & Planet” science-fantasy. If your tastes run towards flashing swords and pistols against a backdrop of alien vistas, soaring airships, and lost civilizations on far-away worlds then this is the game for you.

This roleplaying game is intended to evoke the worlds, as well as the “style” presented in the Martian, Venusian, and other Sword & Planet works of Burroughs, Moorcock, Kline, Vance, and others where no race, creature, or device is too fantastic. Heroic men and women struggle against devious warlords and mad Scientists, and against the ravages of time eroding the frayed edges of their civilizations. The rules presented here are intended to be either a complete game, in and of itself, or to serve as a companion to other fantasy games. They are resources for Referees to pick and choose from, whichever suits their fancy.

The rules are based, in their most basic form, on the original fantasy roleplaying game, and all elements are intended to be mostly compatible with that system, its successive editions and versions, and with other “old-school” “retro-clones” like Colonial Troopers, Guardians, and others.

I bought this book at Gary Con and love it. My review is on Goodreads:

I would love to do up somne sword and planet stuff for you. Might you be interested in having some sandbox or adventure books published by another party for this game? (take a peek at my "Lucanii Drift" for starships and Spacemen, or my work of rthe 'Mars" RPG by adamant).

Just bought this and am devouring it. Question regarding equipment on pg 16. It reads, "1 Platinum piece (pp) is worth 10 Gold pieces (gp), 1gp is worth 10 Silver
pieces (sp), and 10sp is worth 10 Copper pieces (cp).". Can I assume the 10sp = 10cp is a typo and you meant to follow the 1 to 10 ratio of the other types? Such that 1 sp with worth 10 cp?

So, I noticed hit die type is not listed for Sorcerers of the Black Gate....I assume a d6?

I bought this on lulu, and DriveThru won't let me leave a review without buying here.
anyways, this book is awesome--best ERB RPG I have seen and definitely worth every penny simply for the artwork and the awesome beastiary alone.
Great pictures of Tharks, Kaldanes, etc.
I loved the crazy take on magic and the totally messed up sorcerer class in this book!

How can a potentially negative modifier x 100 lbs determine how much a character can carry without a speed penalty?

Not sure if the version here on RPGNow has the OGL or not, but it is definitely absent on the pdf I got on Lulu.
It isn't optional in a simulacrum product. The whole work is steeped in OD&D: Ability Modifier Tables, Classes, XP Progression, 10 levels, HD, the same 6 attributes, Move, Bonus to Hit, currency breakdowns, a lot of the same gear/weapons/damages, several powers/gadgetry replace spells (just re-named in cases), Saving Throws, Hirelings, Same core mechanics, Monster stat blocks with all the OD&D algorithms, etc., etc., ad nauseam...
It could just be an oversight/unintentional omission? Either way, just wanted to bring it to your attention.
As it stands now, this product doesn't appear to be "legal", IMO. You did, however, do a great job including the OGL on Guardians & Colonial Troopers :)

The OGL adds legal protection, but if one designs with care, is not required. This might be a borderline case.

Read this e-book in its entirety, and the blog post you listed. I am still of the opinion there is WAY too much open game content utilized to not include the ogl.
If only a few elements/mechanics were used, it may not be necessary... But, this product is almost entirely an OD&D retro-clone without crediting the authors whose work this is compiled from. I listed a bunch of similarities between WotRP and OGL products above.
New classes and a different setting don't really cancel out all the core mechanics and all the other OGL trappings to qualify as an entirely original system in my honest opinion.
I really think Thomas should include an OGL on WotRP at RPGNow and at Lulu. I'm not a lawyer and it's his call, but what I'm seeing is OD&D in space.

I'm looking at the PDF and the print version, they both have the OGL. I'm wondering if the page got clipped off somehow? Maybe in the export process. Also, we have the OGL as a page on our website/blog to cover our OGL products.

Actually, im pretty sure that game mechanics cant be copyrighted, only a specific presentation of the rules can be. This was the legal finding in the case of monopoly. So as long as nobody copy and pasted directly from an original document and the wording of the rules is original; there should be no need to include the OGL. You cant copyright THACO anymore than you can copyright poker or checkers. With the OGL I would assume you could cut and paste the exact description of how the rule works from the original document.

Does anyone know if they made modules for this game system?
Customer avatar
Jerry L February 27, 2016 2:27 am UTC
Aaron S,
I'll answer your question since it's been in limbo for almost a week...
No, there are no "official" adventures or supplements for WotRP at this time.
But, never say never :)
In the interim, you might look at Adamant Entertainment's Mars line (they have some adventures that should convert with little difficulty to WotRP).

I see the pdf of Warriors of the Red Planet is still the same price as a print copy. There's a reason your Guardians & Colonial Troopers pdfs are in the top 50 and WotRP isn't even in the top 200.. They're both $5 cheaper than print. Also saw you added Guardians pdf on LuLu, but still no Colonial Troopers pdf there. You know, some of your customers might be willing to buy all 3 @ $30. If you would reduce the WotRP pdf, you'd actually make more $ off of it in VOLUME. As it stands now, hardly anybody is gonna buy it at all = minimal sales.

Thanks for the comments Jerry. Colonial Troopers pdf is now available on other channels. But we are definitely focusing DriveThru as our primary source since they do such a great job and service to the gaming community. There are certain obligations why WotRP is priced like it is. The sales of it have actually been fine, I just listed it incorrectly (I had the PDF & Print version as competing listings rather than in one, so they counted as half of what they really were compared to Guardians and CT). Anyways, we are proud of the games and it seems gamers are really enjoying them. DriveThru runs occasional sales which these books could be in.

Well, seems I didn't have to wait long.
Picked up all 3 titles for under $30 like I wanted, so... YAY ME! :)
Customer avatar
Carl D February 29, 2016 11:27 pm UTC
Where did you find all 3 for under $30? Separately they total $35. A bundle would be nice. Because of the price I'll probably go with White Star.

Carl D, I get my e-books from here and LuLu. Problem here is there are rarely discounts for products I haven't already purchased. LuLu sends me coupons every other day or so on print & digital products since I'm an active customer... Sometimes they're BIG discounts, sometimes 15%. I didn't want to wait any longer on these pdfs, so I used a 15% off -- which became $29 & change for all 3. And like you and others have mentioned the steep price on WotRP (I saw the RPGNow comments from others as well on the pdf version before Mr. Denmark combined the print/pdf versions onto one page now, thereby eliminating all the old comments)... I agree with you & all the others (you are in fact the 3rd person on this NEW page's discussion to comment about the cost), $15 for the digital copy is way too much -- especially having read it. I will be reviewing this product soon, so look for my thoughts about the missing OGL, price vs. value, layout, art, etc. and it should give you a better indicator if it's worth the cost....See more

That makes sense. Thanks.

I decided to just go for it and paid the $15 on March 1st. Then it went on sale today, March 3rd. LOL. Just my luck.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
