Love the character generation in Traveller so decided to 1. get everything and 2. bought some of the other physical books (HG and CSC) direct from Mongoose. I then read in a forum that I could request a pdf copy (no charge) direct from Matthew Sprange and a few hours later I get an email with the links to download from RPGNow. I actually bought the core rules from an online retailer (Amazon?) and let Matthew know and he still sent me a link to download the pdf! Yes the pdf's are probably expensive but the service is second to none. Now I just need to return the favour and get this game to the table.

I notice that the .pdf for the Core rulebook version "erratajun2106" is 40 MB bigger than the other file. Why is there that big a difference? It starts to be unwieldy to read on a tablet with Adobe.

Also, does anyone know what font is used on the blank sector map?

Is there any chance that Blank_Sector_Map.pdf might be finished at some point? At present the map key is unfinished, lacking symbols for scout, research, and TAS bases, as well as red zone boundaries. I fixed my copy myself, but this just looks unprofessional.

I'd also like it if drivethrurpg were to separate the new stuff from the old stuff. I'm aware the old stuff is pretty much completely compatible, but since I do not own any legacy material (aside from an old copy of the core book), it would be nice to be able to tell at a glance which system a given supplement was actually designed for.

The shop page is saying I've bought this, but it doesn't have the normal "Click to get it" button and I can't find it in my library!

Something is wrong maybe? I'm not sure what's happened :(

this is mongoose all over, look what they did to Runequest! this edition was unnessesary and is a cash-in. I got the PDF of the main book and see little to no real differance but lots of clored pages and clip art around the same game, Adventures are pretty much usable with the prior editions with a little tweek considering Classic Traveller IS Still available on Drive thruRpg go for that or Mongo Traveller 1st ed, I have payed Traveller in all its editions over 35 years since Classic and Snapshot and Classic is by far the best :) http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/80192/CTTTBThe-Traveller-Bookose

So, I'm looking to pick this up during the GM Day Sale and completely new to the game. So, I have a few questions based on posts made previously:

#1: If there are no rules for ship design or planetary system design in the Core Rulebook, have they released a separate sourcebook(s) that cover this material at this time?

#2: Are there any official PDF downloads for the various Character/Ship/Planetary System Sheets off of the Mongoose Publishing website?

#3: Are there any sourebooks that you would highly recommend that a new player/GM would find incredibly useful when running this game?

#1: High Guard 2nd Edition.

#2: Don't know.

#3: It depends on what experience you have with playing/GMing other tabletop RPGs.

#2: There is some stuff on the Mongoose website, but the version you buy here comes with pdfs for character sheets, subsectors, and floorplans for the few ships in the basic book. Mind you, the subsector map is incomplete (see my post above)...

So, I notice a bunch of the old discussion comments talking about the lack of certain aspects of the book. I just wanted to throw in my two pence.

People are complaining about being 'shafted' by the lack of a ship design chapter in the core rulebook. I appreciate that this has been a staple of the traveller game since time immemorial. But think about it, this is the CORE Rulebook. This means that it should contain the core elements needed to play the game. It tells you everything about how to operate a starship mechanically both in and out of combat,a s well as providing a selection of pre-designed ships that are common to the 3rd Imperium setting - or can be easily adapted to another setting. Yes, okay, you won't be able to build ships for setting X or Y that you want to run with it, but if you want a generic sci-fi setting you have the tools to do that.

Ship design is not needed to run a game of Traveller. It's definitely a nice to have, don't get me wrong, especially if you want to...See more

I know this post is hella old at this point, but I just wanted to say I totally agree. If people want to see what it looks like when everything is included in the core book, they need look no further than Traveler's 5th Edition. Last I checked, it can be had in hardcover for $70 or so. No, there is no rules-lite paperback or pdf available for your would-be players. Everyone who wants to play has to drop that $70 (or pirate a PDF).

I'll take Mongoose's model over that BS any day.

Lots of references to other books that don't yet exist in this edition of Traveller. Are we meant to use the previous edition?

It's been months and there's still no record sheet for planetary systems? Please don't stick to UWP codes exclusively. Also no ship record sheet? If you can't provide the basic tools to design a campaign, what's the point?

There's a Blank Sector Map, but I think the Ship Record Sheet might get tied to "High Guard" when it comes out.

I'm well aware of the blank sector map, it's a record sheet for individual systems that's missing. The UWP codes are a nostalgic holdover that falls woefully short of what I require to keep my system info organized and easy to reference

Are they still pushing that boon/bane rule or did that hopefully get dropped? Also did they put in an index?

It's not a bad rule, it gives a thrilling tactile dimension of throwing 3 dice instead of 2 and keeping the two highest or lowest, which works out to a numerical advantage or disadvantage of about 1-1/2 on the die roll. But you might as well treat it as one level of difficulty easier or harder (those are advantages or disadvantages of 2 on the 2D dice-roll needed.)

No index. i really really really hate that. I forgot that Jack of All Trades is a skill, I spent 10 minutes before finding after look everywhere else: benefits and so on. My rating is 1, 4 out of five for the book itself, but minus three for not having an index (same DM as using a skill untrained).

I ordered the Hardcover Book for $5.00 more than this pdf, what a rip for a pdf, should be free for ordering the HC book. I'm not about to dish out another $30 for a pdf, that's nuts!

Yeah - Mongoose do seem to charge a lot more than most other game companies. I'm also hearing that there have been a number of updates to the book without them being shared on DriveThru. Seems they are only sharing with Beta testers. Way to support your customers Mongoose!

It's also the least stable PDF I've ever downloaded from this sight. Can't run it in PDF Expert without it crashing immediately. The only way I can get it halfway stable is to view with Adobe Acrobat (which is a piece of crap on IOS) streaming from Dropbox. This causes a major lag of page loading, 5-8 seconds per page, which makes running a game fluidly with just the digital copy nearly impossible.

I'd check "Citizens of the Imperium" site or Traveller Wiki for sheets. If any of the fan sites have ones made it'll likely be them. Other possibilities are; Zhodani Base, Freelance Traveller, and probably half a dozen that I'm forgetting, point is, there are a ton of Traveller sites with additional ideas and goodies out there.

Read through all the game. The .pdf is accompanied with character sheet and blank sector map .pdfs, which is good. But the character sheet has no Traveller logo on it.

Also, there is no ship sheet or record. This game has your typical standard Traveller ship designs (and no ship construction rules), but we would need record-sheets to run combats and track damage and such.

Sorry Pierre but mongoose decided to stick it to us with this being the first edition of Traveller ever to have no ship construction rules in the core book.

By the way, the rules for Boon and Bane seem totally unnecessary because earning some kind of advantage or disadvantage this way shifts the odds by about 1.5 on your roll. More precisely, Boon (keeping the highest 2 out of 3 dice) results in an average roll of 8.458, and a Bane (keeping the lowest 2 out of 3 dice) results in an average roll of 5.542, although the probability curve becomes skewed more to higher or lower rolls respectively. The curve may be interesting, but to simplify, why not just shift the difficulty category up or down one notch, +/- 2?
Customer avatar
Pierre S July 24, 2017 4:00 pm UTC
PURCHASER
I was incorrect in one respect: Boon and Bane still allow you the possibility of rolling 2's and 12's, something that would be eliminated with a DM. It's just that the probability curve is skewed to higher or lower numbers.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
