The city of Chala, nestled banks of the Leal river, has prospered for generations. But now the city faces misfortune, pestilence, and decay, because the icon which brought it prosperity has been stolen. All the clues suggest that the sacred object was carried into the heart of nearby Blackweed Swamp. But who, or what, would commit such a crime? Whoever is responsible, the statue must be recovered, at any cost.

Are heroes who can face the horrors of the swamp and reclaim the precious statue? Are they clever enough to unravel a scheme far more sinister than simple theft? Or will they, like others before them, be lured into the clutches of some terrible evil inhabiting the gloomy marsh and disappear forever?

For characters of levels 7-9

Product History

GA2: "Swamplight" (1993), by Jean Rabe, is the second in a series of General Adventures. It was published in March 1993.

Continuing the General Adventures. The General Adventure series had gotten its start just a month earlier with GA1: "The Murky Deep" (1993). It was part of a trend at TSR to release supplements that could be used with any of TSR's many game worlds.

Despite its generic basis, "Swamplight" also followed on its predecessor's lead by including Earthly deities in the adventure. Where "The Murky Deep" featured Irish deities, "Swamplight" instead mentions a few Egyptian gods.

Adventuring Tropes. Adventures in the 2e era were pretty plot-heavy. That's true for "Swamplight" as well, but it's plot-heavy in the best possible way. Though the adventure features plenty of backstory about a stolen statue and what's happened to it, that's just an excuse for the players to head out into a wilderness sandbox.

There are also a lot of machinations in the background, but they're entirely fair manipulations that the players may (or may not) discover. This introduces interesting elements of investigation and negotiation to the plot, keeping it from being just a hex crawl.

In the end, the adventure could go one of a few ways, with the players determining what happens through their own actions.

So, "Swamplight" is a plot-heavy adventure without being a railroaded adventure.

Lizardy Goodness. Lizard men feature heavily in the adventure, with their culture and environment both getting good attention. This makes "Swamplight" reminiscent of a whole slew of early adventures that used lizard men, including: U2: "Danger at Dunwater" (1982); N1: "Against the Cult of the Reptile God" (1982); and I2: "Tomb of the Lizard King" (1982). However, these old antagonists are now re-envisioned with the more mature eye of an RPG industry that's a decade older.

"Swamplight" was part of a general resurgence of lizard men, who also appeared that year as a spacefaring player character race in CGR1: The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook (1992).

About the Creators. Rabe had been writing for TSR since 1987, but 1993 was the last year that she produced multiple gaming books for the company. Beginning in 1994, she focused more on fiction, including novels and Endless Quest books.

I own this from when it was released a long time ago. Ran it once, and my players had a blast running this adventure while they all died in it. That was mostly in part by the fact that they chose to go their own way and found some of the bad secrets before ever even going to the Lizard man village. They were also not the most savvy of adventures and this adventure really has a lot of depth to it. Well worth getting in my opinion.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
