100 Creepy Things and Events to Encounter Outdoors

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a series of creepy items, events and occurrences that could be found in the outdoors. Some of the encounters are best suited for urban areas, others for the countryside and some will work in both, as long as it isn't inside a house. Many of them are suitable for any setting or time period, whilst a few require settings having a technology equivalent to the 19th or 20th centuries depending, as they involve technology.

Not every encounter is immediately obvious as being disturbing; some of them will require players to be paying close attention. Others stand out more noticeably. Whether or not any of the encounters have a negative effect is up to the Game Master. The various items tend more to supernatural and cosmic horror than to gory horror, but there are a few examples of the latter.

There are one hundred items which can be chosen randomly using a d100, or required ones can be chosen. They are laid out in a table, with each entry having a name of what type of encounter it is, then details of the encounter.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Couple A couple can be seen some distance away from the character(s), who may be sat on a bench or standing up somewhere. From a distance, and on a second look, something appears very wrong. Initially, it looks like they are kissing; on a second glance, it appears that one of them is actually biting the other, on the face and neck, tearing pieces of flesh off and swallowing them. Should the character(s) approach them, they are seen to be simply kissing, which could cause problems if they were approached with a violent response.
  • Deserted Area The character(s) are in a part of a town or city that is peculiarly deserted. The streets and buildings nearby are full of life, pedestrians and cars, but the area they are actually in has no pedestrians, no passing traffic and no cars parked on the street, despite there being plenty of parking spaces available. The buildings all seen to be unoccupied and, possibly as a consequence of the area being deserted, are also rundown.
  • Dew This could also be seen after a frost. The dew on a nearby field has a wide path through it, as if something has dragged along the ground. The path left is far too wide to have been a person, and it is continuous, as if something has slithered across the grass.

One page of the supplement is the cover one the front matter and one is ads.

Ah, yes, I wasn't sure if Pathfinder was right.

If you have a desktop PDF reader, such as Acrobat Reader, the V2 version of the file is print friendly as you can turn off the page backgrounds. It might be possible to do the same with mobile readers, but that may depend on a bunch of factors; it's not something I've ever tried.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
