Critical Hits #1 - The Hunt
an encounter by Simon Lucas

D20 System

8 Pages/color

Critical Hits are a closer look at situations that are frequently ignored in the course of a campaign. It is all too easy for the DM and players to focus only on the main storyline. Periods spent on the road or resting are populated with random wandering monsters or a four-day journey is simply collapsed into ?OK. You get there?!

Critical Hits are there to fill these spaces between the story elements with unusual and interesting, sometimes comical but always memorable encounters. The DM can keep the players guessing over which encounters are part of the main story and which is a Critical Hits filler or red herring. When the players think that every action, no matter how insignificant, may impact upon their characters? chances of survival, they start to immerse themselves in the campaign setting. Critical Hits present PCs with a range of situations that distract them from their quests and breathe life into your campaign.

In The Hunt the characters are doing what they spend much of their time doing: traveling. As the PCs travel through a wood one night, they become embroiled in a local drama. A nearby village has suffered a horrific attack and the peasants, believing a werewolf to be responsible, are out for blood!

  • Versatile - Critical Hits can easily be used as a distraction in an ongoing campaign or as a one-shot short scenario

  • Memorable - Each Critical Hits encounter is crammed with unforgettable NPCs and situations that encourage creative role-playing

  • Value for Money - At $3.75, Critical Hits are easy to pick up and hard to put down!

Not a bad encounter to throw at you players on an off night or in between a couple of meatier campaign sections (which is just what it is designed to be), but for the price, I wouldn't mind just a little more fleshing out -- [...]

Not as good as I was hoping. But it still helped get me out of a jam in my gaming group. [...]

I really liked this one and it sets the Critical Hits line off to a good start. The plot itself is only so-so but the completely misguided NPCs with their bizarre ideas of "werewolf tests" are what really make this one. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
