Critical Hits #29 ? The Haunting
an encounter by Simon Lucas

Encounter Level 5

Critical Hits is a series of fantasy encounters created to be dropped into any existing campaign as an interesting diversion from the main storyline or played as a single evening's entertainment. This popular range of products provides DM and player alike with unusual and interesting, sometimes comical but always memorable encounters.

In The Haunting the heroes? journey is brought to an abrupt halt as a sudden dense and eerie mist descends upon the dangerous mountain road they follow. To press on further would be to invite disaster, but to camp in the open with such poor visibility is equally unappealing. As they pause to debate the way forward they see, looming in the mist, an impressive half-timbered coach house. Taking refuge in the gloomy building gets the PCs out of the inclement weather but into a world of mysteries and danger. Can the party discover the dark secrets of the Eagle's Nest, or must the ghosts that haunt the inn linger in torment further?

In this, the largest Critical Hit to date, the players are faced with the tough challenge of two overlapping storylines and the DM is treated to a complete location and a cast of thousands!

Customer Review: by James Stubbs

This is an excellent site-based adventure and easily worth the asking price. If your players enjoy NPC interaction, this one will truly come alive for them as they find themselves involved in numerous plots and machinations at the inn - many of which could overlap each other.

Pure combat parties will find little here for them between the fights but characters who are social animals will be deeply rewarded with the roleplaying opportunities presented. This is a must-have for any GMs collection of pre-made adventures.

Rating: [5 out of 5 Stars!]

  • Versatile - Critical Hits can easily be used as a distraction in an ongoing campaign or as a one-shot short scenario

  • Memorable - Each Critical Hits encounter is crammed with unforgettable NPCs and situations that encourage creative role-playing

  • Value for Money - At $3.75, Critical Hits are easy to pick up and hard to put down!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
