Critical Hits #31 ? Fear in Midwinter
an encounter by Simon Lucas

D20 System

12 Pages/color
Encounter Level 7

Critical Hits is a series of fantasy encounters created to be dropped into any existing campaign as an interesting diversion from the main storyline or played as a single evening's entertainment. This popular range of products provides DM and player alike with unusual and interesting, sometimes comical but always memorable encounters.

In Fear in Midwinter the party finds itself embroil in a creepy tale of terror. The simple folk of the sleepy, snowy town of Midwinter are terrified by an evil presence, which threatens them all. The safety and the continued existence of the town seem uncertain. The fearful townsfolk, desperate that the attacks on their homes and families be stopped turn to the PCs to help them discover what the ghastly apparition is that stalks their town at night, and what part the soothsayer, who arrived at the town predicting doom, has to play.

Fear in Midwinter is the first of a two-part Christmas Critical Hit. The encounter can be played alone or as a prelude to the second part, War in Midwinter. For a place that's covered in snow, Midwinter could be the hottest location in your games this holiday season!

  • Versatile - Critical Hits can easily be used as a distraction in an ongoing campaign or as a one-shot short scenario

  • Memorable - Each Critical Hits encounter is crammed with unforgettable NPCs and situations that encourage creative role-playing

  • Value for Money - At $3.75, Critical Hits are easy to pick up and hard to put down!

An excellent adventure! Good story line, good plot, and well thought out. The only problem I had with this module, is that it does not include a map of the village. While the village map is not required, it would have been very nice, as the adventure [...]

If your players don't think much of environmental damage, this will quickly change their minds. The PCs are sent into a very cold land where the temperatures routinely stay below freezing. If this wasn't bad enough, a group of rogue adventurers have set [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
