Need a quick NPC?

Flip through a few of these NPC cards and you're sure to find an NPC that fits the situation. All the common races are represented (humans, dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, half-elves, and half-orcs). Many of the NPCs are low level, but they range from level 1 to 20. Of course you're also free to change a character's background to fit the adventure. Or use them as "face" cards and develop with your own background, personality & other details from scratch.

The PDF version of this product has 4 cards per page, laid out so page two is designed to be printed on the back of page one and so on. This layout is optimized to allow the card backs to match the fronts.  Or order the printed cards and get the PDF at no extra cost!

Generic/Simple Game Stats

The cards focus on each character's background and personality. The few stats used (class, race, level, alignment, ability scores, armor class, & hit points) are familiar to most game masters. The stats are easy to convert to another system in just a few minutes or even as a game is played.

Adventure Hooks Abound!

Each character has interesting details that can lead to adventures or side-quests:
• How are the rebels planning to use Prinestia Sellex?
• Why does Tik Elleth constantely refer to Wizly?
• How is Princess Klestra planning to save her kingdom?
• What is Tansall the Scoured greatest regret?
• What will Ohn do now that his mission is complete?
• Who is blackmailing Zelaymor Tynalria?
• How does Ularian plan to wipe out the elven kinggdom?
• Why is Trayvis known as the "Oathbreaker"?

54 characters, 1 per card, plus the cover/checklist card. There are a few 23 humans, with the rest being an roughly even mix of elves, gnomes, dwarves, halflings, half-elves and half-orcs. (Yes, that's the same number of humans as the other deck. I wanted to get roughly the same mix, but didn't expect to end up with the same number.)

I'm afraid that the many different artists and styles is a little too off-putting for me to want to pick this deck up... I _really_ don't like computer-generated imagery in table-top products; both because of the "uncanny valley" effect, and they tend to print up "muddy" because the colours & contrasts are designed for screen-viewing not printing. Normally, though, I recommend the encounter and bestiary decks to everyone.

Now you can! I missed the extra toggle to turn on the printed cards, and the publisher view of the page was showing the printed cards option. Thanks for asking!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
