A succinct and clever rules system, easily learned by younger players.

So far there's three adventures available. Hopefully there will be more in the future.

All in all, well done.

Mr. Goeringer,
I have to tell you I absolutely love your game it’s like a Haiku rpg simple but full of depth. It’s incredible! I was wondering though do you think it would break the game to shift rolls to D6+2, D6+1 and D6 so as to not have subtraction be part of the rolls?

Thank you, your praise for the game means a great deal to me. I don’t believe it would break the game but it could possibly allow certain monsters to be “one shotted” in combat. Inversely some monsters and characters could possibly never take damage in combat from certain low damage dealing sources. The whole number system would have to change across the board I think to compensate for it. It’s worth trying out and seeing how it goes. Let me know if you give it a shot and how it went.

Wow, really nice rules-lite RPG! I ahve one question though: I really dont understand how armor works. Are they just cosmetics? What about shields? Thanks!

Thank you very much!

Normal armor is in essence built into the classes Combat Skill (CS), but magical armor and shields provide Deflect which will allow you to block more damage. Unique amor and shields found in the Magic Item List or the Magic Item Cards provide special abilities as well.

With shields, usually they are cosmetic unless they are magical, but a Pocket Master could just as well rule in certain situations that a shield might provide a reroll against certain types of attacks, as an example.

Pocket Fantasy RPG relies on the Pocket Master to adjudicate certain situations and make a ruling (usually providing a reroll for the good guys or bad guys) compared to having a set rule for every situation, due to the quick and small scope of the game.

I hope this has been helpful. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!

Thanks
Brandon

Thanks for the quick answer! My only problem with the built-in thing, is what if the wearer choose not to wear it? Anyway, here is my take: Light armors provide 1 Deflect per Encounter, and Heavy armors provide 2. They only deflect 1 point of damage per deflect points though. (so a magical armor is still far superior)

That’s a good take on armor for sure. If they don’t wear armor you could rule that the enemy they are being attacked by gets to reroll their attack and take the best result.

The focus of Pocket Fantasy RPG is to have a nights adventure while trying to keep as much of the rules and things to track as simple as possible. So in my design I want the players to not have to remember things (if possible) that might slow the game down. Especially when it comes to new or young players in mind. This philosophy doesn’t always gel with players of more complete rules system that are more comprehensive. But fortunately, the game is so lite that rules such as your own can easily be fitted into the game to make it more enjoyable to those that like a more comprehensive rules set. I know some would rather have more rather than less actually in the rules themselves, which I understand.

Thanks

Hey Brandon -- THANK YOU! I'm a brand new DM, basically if i want to play an RPG i needed to be the one to take on the task of running the game, and knowing my game group it also had to be easy to learn and cheap -- I HIT THE JACKPOT HERE!!! for the 1st time in the process of looking for a system to play IM ACTUALLY EXCITED TO PLAY AS DM!!! This system has the perfect balance of light rules but still feels complex (in a good way) and i think its the combat.. most of the other "rules light" systems just didnt cut it for me, reading the example of play PDF - i was in! really gave me the feel of when i play skirmish games using minis! Your subtraction method for CS adds the perfect amount of complexity. I dont see my group having time or interest in playing any long epic campaigns and i certainly am no writer! so this is gonna be perfect for 1 shots or even 3-4 session campaigns. -- ok im rambling, so here is a question:

Well thank you very much for that glowing praise! I'm so glad you have found a game you were looking for to help you become a new DM. This makes all the work worth it! Also thanks for commenting, it helps people know about the game and maybe give it a try for themselves.

Regarding the door its the former, if you, as a Pocket Master, want to randomly decide if the door is locked, you roll a d6 and on a 1 its locked or stuck. Of course if you
want to make them do a little work (possibly the thief) or it seems that the door should probably be locked or stuck just rule that it is.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask. Good luck with your game!

Holy XXX Brandon, your little Pocket Fantasy RPG might well be one of the most perfectly executed role gaming products I have ever witnessed since 1975!!

I don't give praise easily. But you sure have it here. Brilliantly transportable. Faster than almost everything out there. Light weight, I mean dang, it truly is pocket friendly.

Coffee table friendly. Newby friendly. Able to entertain this jaded old DM as well. There's barely anything to purchase. You might want to look into making the cards professionally. I'd certainly gladly buy this as a small card game item.
I'm assuming I'm printing it out, playing with my colouring gear and then using the usual box tape lamination method I've managed to master.
But I would not mind fancy schmancy cards too :) I'd drop 20 bucks on a purchase without a moments hesitation.

I've noticed you have some adventures created. Likely going to grab those up.

If you have not managed any awards for this gem, they are over...See more

Downloaded and tried this game out on my wife, and a couple of friends. I have been into table-top rpgs since the late 1970s. My group tried D&D, but found it too complicated for their tastes. We are in our early 60s, and had a ball playing! The game is simple, but can be detailed to your preferences of play. What tables would you recommend for a homebrew gm screen?

Thank you Kenneth for your support and kind words! I’m glad you found it and a fun time was had by all.

For a home brew GM screen I would take the task system difficulty numbers, and the front and back of the second sheet of the main rules. When I run it I normally have the monster list main page in front of me to reference when the fighting starts. When dungeon crawling I reference the dungeon room generator and room features table. All these I think would make for a good screen.

Please leave a written review if you find the time and are able. Again thank you so much for checking out and supporting the game it means a lot. I’m glad veteran players such as yourself can appreciate and enjoy the game. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hi Brandon,

Im new on paper and pencil's RPG and i decided to get started with your fabolous system, but i had a few undestanding problems reading the rules like i dont know the meaning of "CS D6-2" attempting to create a character for example, or the task resolution system bases on skills (that i havent found) so my question is if are there any videos or posts explaining the system for beginers. Thanks for your attention and sorry for my english, isn't my mother language.

Hi Alejandro,

Thanks for checking out the game and the kind words. I will attempt to explain here so that others might see it if they also need an explanation.

CS D6-2 means to roll a six-sided die and subtract 2 from it. CS means Combat Skill (how good the character, attack or monster is at combat) which will be different for classes and monsters.

The task resolution system is a roll of a D6 and it succeeds if you roll high enough based on the difficulty that the task has been assigned by the person running the game, the “Pocket Master”. Every character and monster can attempt tasks such as strength based tasks or agility based tasks, etc. and the Pocket Master must decide what the difficulty for that task would be for each character or monster attempting the task.

If you haven’t already, check out the example of play which is a pdf that is one of the downloads. It may help.

I hope this has been helpful. If you still need help please let...See more

Hi Brandon,
Nice little system and I'm looking forward to giving it a try for some pickup games. Just a quick question after a read-through. While dwarves and elves can see in the dark, humans and halflings can't. I can't seem to find anything in the rules on how darkness impacts things. What happens to a human or halfling character's actions when the torches go out?

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for checking out the game and the comment.
Much of Pocket Fantasy RPG relies on the reroll and the task system. Should the lights go out, tasks should become much more difficult for those characters that can’t see in the dark. Perhaps if they are trying to attack a monster, the monster might get to reroll its defense action, and/or maybe the player must make a tough or very difficult task roll just to be able to even have an attempt to attack the monster. It’s really up to the Pocket Master and what makes sense to them to keep the game fun. If you have any other questions please leave a comment. If you get a chance to play I’d love to know your thoughts and maybe if you could leave a review.

Thanks!

For a very long time I've been looking for a rulesystem that provides D&D-like experience with minimal amount of rules and math so it would be easy to play for both game master and players. Looks like I found one - Pocket Fantasy RPG :)

Things that I really like in this game:
- The way "attribute checks" are implemented: it's just a logical level of task complexity (simple, average, tough, etc.) that maps to necessary d6 value
- Approach to cost of things: values are defined by dice roll made based on item rarity (mundane, normal, unique) so no "tables of items" and any kind of perplexities when something isn't found there

Things that are good but could be a little bit better:
- Combat maybe is too simple, would be nice to have some optional rules that add some basic tactic (attack from behind, covers, losing spells on damage)
- Layout and language: they do what they have to do but there are still some minor problems that make perfectionists...See more

Thanks for the nice, positive response. I believe the game more than deserves a character sheet and it will add to the personality of the game. I wonder if you're going to add a separate document or add it directly to the core rules. Do you have more games? I wish you have a dark theme/supernatural game with similar rules/framework. When you purchase the core rules, it is divided in a few separate documents. ( Reference cards, rules, etc) I think you can put it there, as another document. I'm afraid that if you put it as a separate pdf, maybe some people won't be able to find it. Yes, I'm thinking something like world of darkness. I think the framework you have in Pocket Fantasy, is perfect and easily adapted to some genres but I think it will be a great adaptation for a supernatural themed game.

Hello again. Hope youre doing well. im just finished to transcribe my previous PCs from 5TD to Pocket Fantasy. I think the new character sheets are well done and have good info to track your PC, but i think theyre small. I think it will work better if you rotate the sheet and make it a single sheet per page because its easy to fill completely and run out of space. Also Maybe reduce "race" to one row. Finally you can fill the resultant space below, with a classic "Notes" rows/section. I already talked to my players and they agree to take a one shot with Pocket Fantasy instead Five torches deep. Hope by the weekend i have a review. Thanks again for your kindness and support.
EDIT: Maybe you can have 2 character sheets because this game is also very good to play anywhere and the little character sheet is more appealing to transport or playing anywhere outside the house.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
