Bushido: A Tale of Honor Lost

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In the far north of Nippon, in the Mutsu Province, one can find less-traveled and almost secluded areas. Such an area is found surrounding Tanomo, an agricultural area that has been ruled for many years by a much-respected and beneficient Daimyo. But, over recent years, this highly regarded Daimyo has begun to behave in a rapacious manner and virtually loot his own lands and people. With the poverty and distant nature of this area, those outside are unfamiliar with the radical changes that have been taking place.
Player-adventurers have entered this region and will hope to discover what is going on and what is actually behind the strange behavior of the long-respected Daimyo.

Any chance of this in print? I can't use PDFs.

What I feel makes this a good purchase is that it provides a story that could be set anywhere in Nippon and has enough material for it to be expanded upon, or if preferred, to adapt it as many of us do anyway. We all like to tinker.

Yes, some of the terminology is identical to that used in Western culture - real or fantasy - but any GM worth their salt is capable of rephrasing this to give a little more flavour as I certainly do in my recently started campaign.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their view, but as one comment has already identified, there has been a gap of thirty years since anything official and constructive feedback should encourage more to be produced and I hope this occurs.

I had waited also 30+ years for some Bushido products. I got this one as soon as it came out and find it to be worth the price. It is only $4. There is enough good stuff here to work into any Bushido game. It has some mistakes and some good ideas that you can work with. I of course have been running my campaign for 17 years now fairly steadily and to me it is just great to see them putting out Bushido books of any kind.

Waited 30+ years to see if any new material would be published for one of most favourite RPGs, and this is it.
If it was $1 I might take a punt, but the cover does not make me want to look inside. When you do look at the preview it only makes matters worse.
I wish it every success as we need more RPG material - but it needs to be better than this, in my opinion.
How much Bushido has the author actually played or GM'ed?

My reaction was very similar (though I did buy the PDF)- this is underwhelming, as a Bushido module, and as a module full-stop. There is little sense that the author has played Bushido, or that he has much feel for Japanese culture/history etc. For example, he describes a castle as being decorated with rugs, tapestries and curtains (hello?) - and our big villain is straight out of Ray Harryhausen... I had the sense he had converted a D&D module and changed the names... Pages of dialogue for the GM to read out, but not enough NPC stats etc. It reads like a detailed synopsis for a film, not an adventure module. However - the other new Bushido adventure, Honor Bound, is the reverse of all this. Really good - on par with Valley of the Mists.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
