Notebook Essentials: Before Level One

What happens before your character becomes first level? There are a whole lot of skills learned and yet when you multiclass you don't get that burst of skills again. So why are all those skills dedicated to your first level's class? Why can't they go toward some other profession your character had?

Now they can. Is your Ranger a former Blacksmith? Now your skills can reflect that former training. Create richer backgrounds for your character because now you can put the skill points into skill unrelated to the class you take at 1st level.

And, while you are creating these pre-first level characters, I just know you want to try a really low-level adventure. What is it like when the small hamlet's completely wet-behind-the-ears youth must face a lone orc? Rules for adventuring before level one are also included.

Give it a try!

What are Notebook Essentials?

Most DMs have them. Some players have them. That notebook with scraps of ideas and photocopies of old gaming magazine articles that's now bursting the binding that holds the notebook together. Notebook Essentials are those little scraps of ideas that don't quite fit into a full length book that we hope you'll print out and add to that notebook.

NE:BLO is a supplement for OGL and D20 products. It uses the concept of "micro-classes", professions and trades that your character may have been involved in before he became an adventurer. The text is well-written, straight-forward, and simple to [...]

Very interesting little book if you want your staring PC to have more of a variety of skills or for making up really low-level hero-wannabe NPCs. I wouldn?t mind seeing another book with more mirco-classes. DISLIKED: No cover. QUA [...]

I really enjoyed reading this work, and look forward to putting it to good use. The pre-levels make sense, and the included NPC class (the Minstrel) may also see use in a game. LIKED: Layout and Font DISLIKED: A couple of the e [...]

This isn't that bad of a product. It reminds me greatly of the zero level rules found in the old Greyhawk book back in the day. One of the things my group and I often like to do is begin our more epic feeling campaigns by rolling our characters up as [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
