What Sinister Tidings Are Afloat?

The Claws of Madness is a standalone 5th Edition adventure carefully designed for a group of 1st-level heroes, including new monsters, magic items, and a thrilling story arc. Edited by Michele Carter (co-editor of the 5th Edition Player’s Handbook), this dungeon crawl combines the best elements of classic adventures with fresh new exciting avenues. The story in this book also provides the perfect base for an epic, long-running campaign suitable for higher-level characters, in which the heroes unravel the dark mystery of the mythical Hand of Narkul . . .

For centuries, Aelmor Monastery near the port town of Sestone was a safe haven for scholars, monks, and pilgrims seeking enlightenment, its renowned library home to an enormous collection of ancient manuscripts, tomes, and peculiar writings. After suffering a devastating attack at the hands of a possessed monastery elder, Aelmor fell into ruin, its troubled past forgotten. When villagers start disappearing and turn up horribly mutated days later, fear takes a grip of Sestone. What sinister forces are at work? And to what end?

  • 40 pages PDF e-book / softcover

  • Exciting dungeon crawl with new monsters & magic items

  • Drop into any existing campaign, easy to modify

  • Perfect basis to build a long-running higher level campaign

  • High quality maps, illustrations and cover artwork

Im loving the adventure and my players are really engaged from our first session!! As they are on their way to the monastery is there any way to get the maps without any of the marks to print for my players?

Wonderfully creepy adventure! A good way to introduce players or new DM's to d&d. Here is a video review I did on it:

Very well written! I have been preparing to run this adventure twice for two different groups and and am pretty happy with my purchase. Lots of depth and detail to work with! One thing I found in the PDF Appendix were some typos for some NPC ability scores. Pretty obvious what the intended scores were, but wanted to report, before misprints, etc. Both Mangkoons display 2+(1) CON, instead of 12(+1) and the plus signs and parenthesis are wonky for Guthber Tomund (but the stats are accurate.)

Hello: Can you tell me roughly how many sessions it takes to complete, please?

Have a question - this seems to potentially fit very well into a Homebrew campaign I am running at home for 6 people. With that said, they are all going to be going into it at Level 5. I am not afraid to customize the campaign and I easily fiddle with monster placement and such, do you think it would be possible for me to do this easily or is the level 1-3 requirement so hardwired in there that it's not recommended? I'm mainly looking for plot/npcs/puzzles/maps and can handle upping difficulty levels.

Hi Ari, hope this message gets to you in time (I spent some time in hospital so could not reply earlier).
You will get a great story that plants the seed for many adventurers to come. There's quite a bit of puzzles, roleplaying and well fleshed out locations. I think you can easily up the encounter levels where needed. There's even some TPK encounters in there, that are optional for low levels, but you could go to town with them and really challenge your group :)

Chris,

Thanks for the reply back. I see, well I'm glad you're back to better health and out of that place and hopefully back at home! I truly appreciate your response. I read through the full-size Preview PDF and it appears this adventure may help me but let me kind of describe to you my campaign and plan here:

My players will soon be on the way to a town named Harrogath, which I intended to have a bit bigger feel than Tristram from Diablo. This turns out great because Sestone has that kind of feel, so check mark there. They are chasing a man named Rast who has a powerful artifact that is corrupting him. Under the Monastery will be something dark, something that needs the power from this artifact to fully become itself (I don't know what that something will be). People have been disappearing or coming back in bad ways. Many have fled the town but others are holding out because a band of adventurers went down into the Monastery just a few days ago. Before arriving the party heard dark...See more

Hi sir,

You may or may not have purchased the adventure by now, but it sounds like it will give you a lot of places, npcs and story hooks that perfectly weave into your campaign. For faster response please reach us on https://www.facebook.com/loresmythofficial/ because the DriveThruRPG comments system is not something we check daily. Happy to be of help there!

What a funderful value. Yes I'm making up words. Great art work with creepy cuthulu feel. Clean story line. Easy to run. I'm not new to D&D but I am to 5e. Had no problems running with my newbie group. I'm looking forward to the next one. Great job.

Hey there, left a review but all in all I can say I am really looking forward come march to get the follow up book (since I'm heavily interested in what the Vordens will bring) (or put the Kickstart into motion).

I hope you can in the meantime release a one / two session shot about the map, for people enjoying style presented in TCoM.

I absolutely loved the event at 31. it spices up so many things and helps the DM to make sth. memorable without investing a lot...

Wish there was already more from LoreSmyth.

Ah...
I mean an adventure you can run inbetween and it should take not more than one (or two) sessions to be done with it... a ~4 to 6 hr track...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
