Skys' The Limit Setting for the Free Wars system!
In Sky’s The Limit, a setting for the Free Wars wargame, aerial navies try to blast each other out of the Great Blue Yonder. High in the sky above a ravaged world of Efora, sky pirates flying biplanes and weaponized zeppelins face off against the Imperial Aerial Navy and their fleet of flying maritime warships, while magical flying saucers and rocketships do battle with hordes of giant birds and great sky-whales. With civilization in ruins, factions vie for control of the skies, each trying to protect their territory and interests in the small pockets of habitable land.
Nobody is really quite sure what caused the Great Catastrophe. The elves blame relentless human expansion, the Brothers of Icarus say it was a natural event that worsened normal conditions, and the Druids claim it was the gods of nature trying to take back the land. No matter the cause, the effect was the same; the seas rose and began to engulf the land, the winds became a constant gale, and all life was forced to move above the clouds to survive. Now the remains of civilization survive on floating islands and remote mountain peaks. Merchant ships traverse the violent cloud-sea between safe ports, guarded from roving sky pirates by the enchanted ships of the elven navy.
While views on who should be allowed to run things radically differ, massive clashes between factions are uncommon. Nobody (except the druids) wants to risk destroying the sky-cities that represent the vast majority of the habitable terrain left. With resources limited and the recovering civilization still fragile, you’d have to be a damn fool to want to be the one accused of shattering the last chance the world has to survive. Instead, skirmishes in the shipping lanes represent the most common battles, with occasional takeovers of sky-ports by one group or another.
