The New Year is a great time to pick up a New Game, so we've marked this digital title down by 25%! To find more savings, visit our New Year, New Game sale page.

Blood and Bone is a dark and gritty fantasy roleplaying game.

Play as a ragtag company of sellswords, a savage band of raiders, or a gang of outlaws and thieves in the unique and deadly world of Ossura.

Create rich characters, driven by human desires in stories fueled by war, intrigue, and exploration.

Mechanics:

The core mechanic is a simple, streamlined d20 based system -- easy to learn and easy to use.

Character customization is the heart of the system. There are no professions or classes, instead, characters define themselves through an expansive list of unique Traits.

Half the book is a campaign setting, which can be easily used with any other roleplaying system.

No explanation about "CMW" on NPC's statblocks. I've found the answer here reading a customer but no answer from the author. It's very strange that's not explained in the book, even if this is not a game destined to beginners.

CMW refers to "Chance of Major Wounds" it's just a reference to save the Arbiter a bit of time. We'll be updating the NPC section soon to address it as well as add some new content.

I already downloaded the free setting and decided that it was a perfect fit for my upcoming campaign. Even though I won't use the Blood and Bone system, I decided to purchase the game to show my support. Keep on the good work!

I do have one question though - would it be possible to add a printer friendly version of the game and/or setting document? Simply removing the background image would do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your support!

While we don't have printer friendly versions at this time, the PDF's do allow copy-pasting, so you can reproduce sections as plain text for personal use in your games.

Could i get some clarification on how to balance encounters against enemies? The book says its based off traits, etc but I'm exactly clear on it.

Absolutely! There's an Encounter Table on page 37 that gives a rough outline on balancing fights. It has three columns, the number of enemies in relation to the players, their relative strength, and the resulting threat level to the group. In general, the players should find an equal number of NPC's with similar abilities areal fight; less or weaker enemies makes it easier, more or or stronger enemies makes it harder. These are just guidelines -- balance encounters based on what you're group likes and what is appropriate for the type of game you're running.

Bought the book over the weekend and have a question after reading it. What does "CMW" mean in the NPC example stat blocks mean?
Customer avatar
Dave D December 27, 2017 8:17 pm UTC
Pretty sure this is the "Cause Major Wound #" which is not explained anywhere that I could find.

I bought the PoD of this a while ago and just received an email saying that the PDF has been updated with artwork, and more or expanded sections, does this mean the PoD I bought is now out of date?

I'd like to know the answer to that too, as I did the same. Even an idea of, specifically, what was changed would be helpful.

I went through the printed Hardcover book and compared it to the new PDF. Looks like there are several pieces of new art (including some great pieces in the NPC section), four new things to craft with Apothecary (including an Ossuran equivalent of Greek fire and a Corpsebloom bomb), and the only change I noticed to the Traits was that the Potent Blooded Ability was replaced by one called Surge that does the same thing and grants a new Desperate Action that allows you to take a temporary decrease to your max Power to avoid taking Wounds.

Obviously, I wish these changes had been implemented before it was made available for Hardcover printing (the new NPC portraits, in particular, are really awesome and would have looked great in print), but the new game material does not appear to be substantial enough to make me feel like my print copy is now invalidated.

Ok that's good to know, still feel a bit miffed but as long as they don't decide to update the PoD I can deal with it.

We intend on continuing to update the PDF with new art, new content, and balance changes. These updates are free and accessible to anyone who has purchased the game. While we do include a summation of the new content, we have not itemized them publicly. We do not currently intend on implementing these changes in our print on demand options. If you have any more questions, please let us know!

We opted for a premium heavyweight print in full color -- this means a more expensive but superior quality product.
We may yet release a soft cover product that will be significantly less expensive.

The text and images for the NPC, Risen and Bestiary sections of the book are blurry making it difficult to read without squinting at it. Just thought I would bring it up since no-one else has made mention of it yet.

I was looking through the traits while trying to make a character and cam across the "Alert" trait:
ALERT
Prerequisite:Master Perception
Benefit: If your Alacrity is less than 10, treat it as if it
were 10.
Benefit: Surprise attacks against you do not gain
Advantage.
Benefit: Increase your Perception Skill one Rank.

What die do you roll with Master rank +1?
Customer avatar
Arcana G August 24, 2017 4:15 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Many Traits increase a Skill by one rank. If a Character is already Master Rank when they take such a Trait, they do not gain this benefit, as Skills cannot exceed Master Rank. Thank you for pointing out that error. Alert should not have the third benefit.

Could you please say something about the magic system, which isn't in the quickstart rules. Who can use magic? What are the limits of magic powers? Mechanically, how does magic work (spell slots, magic points, etc)? Thanks!
Customer avatar
Arcana G August 09, 2017 1:57 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Absolutely! So called magic in in the setting is referred to as Blood. It can be gained thought the Traits that characters gain as they level, if the take the first Trait at character creation. It has the power to destroy and repair flesh, and even raise the dead. Mechanically it functions like all other Traits, giving access to abilities, granting perks, and empowering characters. Characters that use Blood do have a magic point system, called Power. Blood abilities frequently cost one or two Power. Power be replenished through rest, or from nearby deaths.

Now here is a question, when creating a campaign with Blood and Bone does a DM need to make all the NPC selfish, greedy, or unpleasant? Can he encourage his players to consider making characters who are generally decent people, though not without flaws, and actually have it that there can be heroes?

Mainly, is one required to make things as grim and cynical as Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire? I am fine with low fantasy which is a bit gritty, but not if it has to be played like that series.

The players can absolutely be good characters, and villains can certainly be evil. Blood and Bone simply encourages steering away from binary absolutes in favor of human motivations. Your game can be as dark (or light) as you want, the system just suggests that both of those are shades of grey.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
