The Exodus System is a new standalone RPG inspired by my favorite systems of all time, including Black Hack, Cortex Prime, Numenera/Cypher System and the Adventurer, Conqueror, King System (ACKS).

Inside is a complete game ready for you to hack. It's suitable for any genre, from stone age historical to sci-fi. Character creation is fast and easy. You get to create your own class by simply choosing two Roles and two Flavors. Every character gets a Role that's useful in combat and one that's non-combat applications so everyone always has time to shine.

This purchase comes in both PDF form, for easy reading, and in a Word document so you can hack the system. Besides the name "Exodus System" and my name, Jacob DC Ross, everything in the book is Open Content with the OGL.

Thiese files have no interior art in order to make printing easier and less expensive. You can find a version of this game with gorgeous art as part of a bundle with this product.

As a living document, this game is going to get regularly updated, and your purchase here gets you access to those updates.

Jacob R., will you continue to update this SRD or is it finished now that the full book is released? I really like your system, but for a generic game I prefer no art. That probably sounds weird (especially considering I am an RPG artist myself), but for an anything goes system I have always found artwork constraining. Dunno. Good luck with getting recognition on this awesome project.

Thanks for the kind words. Oh, so you're THAT Jeremy H. The guy with the crazy space monsters. Cool beanz. Yeah, I am going to update the SRD. Like a dummy I added the new content in another file instead of my master for the SRD. It's gonna be a pain to transfer and edit, so it'll probably be a few weeks.

I'm surprised at the response to this game. It's been crazy. A good kind of crazy.

Crazy space monsters? Really? Not so much. I mean, I guess I do have a few. Check out my free "JH Illos Newsletter" here on OBS for a fairly recent overview of my efforts. Most of my individual stock art is currently science fiction or science fantasy because I've taken the lion's share of my fantasy work and placed them them in Fantasy Stock Art Packs (3 of them, 60+ concepts and over 130 images each). I have been selling stock art on here since 2014 but some of my older pieces weren't getting much traffic and clogging up my storefront so I'm smooshing them into the previously mentioned stock art pack format. I still have yet to do that for my science fiction/fantasy stuff though. I'm trying to make room for my newer work on my storefront and also, maybe reorganize a bit.

Regarding your system, I think you've hit upon a definite sweet spot of new school mechanics, brevity and universality. So, when you put the final touches on the SRD document, I will definitely be taking the PDF to a local...See more

I like what I'm seeing so far, but it's a lot to get my head around in a digital format. I think I want to get it printed. Is this digest or letter sized in layout?

It's in letter format.

Ok. Thanks for the quick reply. The layout seems a bit spacious for letter. I would have guessed digest. Perhaps I phrased my question poorly. Maybe I should have asked what the body font size is and what are the intended print dimensions.

Also, the page numbers seem to be out of sequence. They begin with 2 after the cover and the contents are character creation which ends on page 15. And then, immediately after page 15 the pages are numbered 2 to 28.

I assume this is different from the "Exodus rpg" (post-apocalyptic rpg by Glutton Creeper Games)?

Yeah, it's not that. I hadn't heard of that one. Placeholder code name for the project was Genesis. Someone mentioned that FFG is doing something called "Genesys", so as a joke I changed the name to Exodus System.

Perhaps, since Genesys and Exodus have been used, you could call it the Deuteronomy System.

True. I wasn't aware of other Exodus game when I wrote this up. So it's "he Exodus System". :But yeah, Deuteronomy. , I could go Goth and call it Lamentations.

Except ... Exodus is a trademarked game by another company that has been out for a decade. You're basically saying you didn't do your due diligence (in looking up existing game names and trademarks -- this one would have been trivial, it's right here on DTRPG/RPGnow), and don't care to avoid conflicts with other people's properties ... because you didn't realize it when you started. Which is rather intellectually/professionally lazy excuse. The fact that you've started collecting money on it also means you could get sued for it. And your answer is basically "well, I didn't know" -- which is a complete cop out. The burden is on you, not them. Including the burden of changing the name of your game/system. Which you clearly have no intention of doing, as you're continuing to release new properties using the name.

I've contacted them.from what I found the game appeared to be dead, as their last OP Adventure was 3-1/2 years overdue.

Also, John, it's not a trademark. I've looked up to see if "Exodus" or "Exodus RPG" were trademarked. They weren't. According to a search made today on the USPTO, neither Glutton Creeper nor 4hour own any trademarks whatsoever.

The first thing is says on page 2, under the artwork, of the Exodus "Survivors Guide" is "Exodus, OPS(R), and the GCG logo are trademarks of Glutton Creeper Games."

I see where the confusion lies. To actually own a trademark you have to apply for it with the government. If you go to search the US Patent and Trademark Office website, like I did, you'll find that there is no actual registered trademark for "Exodus" to Glutton Creeper Games or 4hour, nor is there a trademark at all for "Exodus RPG", I searched for what you listed, "Exodus, OPS", and there's never been a trademark of that, either. There are many trademarks of "Exodus", relating to such things as cell phones, leather, diet pills and more. The only thing that has anything to do with tabletop gaming is "Exodus the Collectible Card Game". And the name "The Exodus System" is distinct enough from that trademark to be non-infringing.

That's for a registered trademark. Trademarks don't _have_ to be registered (it's the difference between TM and R). It's definitely a lesser status than a registered trademark, requiring more proof of infringement/dilution by the owner, but it's still a trademark. (also, I don't think their claim was for "Exodus, OPS" as a registered mark, but "OPS" ... 3 claims: OPS as registered, Exodus as non-registered, Glutton Creeper Games as non-registered).

And, "Exodus" vs "The Exodus System" -- it's already caused confusion. Within a day of being released, you had someone asking if they were related (and no telling how many others, who were confused until they read that message). Which is the whole purpose of trademarks: to avoid brand confusion/dilution. It wasn't distinct enough to keep people from asking.

Except that they have it listed as a registered mark, (R), when it's not.

Look, I don't know what to tell you, pal. They've never responded to me after I contacted them once people made me aware of the previous game, the game's not been updated in years and when I did my search on the US Patent and Trademark site nothing came up.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
