One of the best parts of roleplaying is the opportunity to explore strange, new worlds. Now Chessboards: Planes of Possibility provides gamemasters with the first organized, flexible system for designing and evolving game environments. This fun-to-read book covers such topics as the various types of planes and their relationships, planar growth cycles, wways to planes, and several varieties of interplanar traveL For those using The Primal Order, it also includes expanded guidelines on planar use primal energy, planar artifacts, and advanced interactions between planes and deities. Five samples metaplanes provide inspiration and illustrate important concepts. Usable with any roleplaying system, this reference work will give GMs the tools they need to create exciting new planes, run multiple settings in one campaign, or link several campaigns into one logically organized muftiverse.

Keep in mind, The Primal Order is what is called a capsystem—a system of rules designed to be an extension of any game system on the marlet.

"Peter Adkison's The Primal Order... is probably the single most useful book a GM can buy regarding the proper and effective use of gods and religion in a campaign." - Loyd Blankenship, Pyramid

--

This book is not a roleplaying game; it must be used with an existing roleplaying game system, such as those listed below.

The Primal Order is what we call a "capsystem": a system of rules designed to enhance and extend any game system on the market. To eliminate guesswork, we have included specific conversion rules for integrating The Primal Order with the following popular game systems:

  • The Arduin GrimoireTM
  • Ars MagicaTM
  • Castle FalkensteinTM
  • Chivalry & SorceryTM
  • CORPSTM
  • EarthdawnTM
  • GURPSTM
  • HarnmasterTM
  • Hero SystemTM
  • KultTM
  • PendragonTM
  • RoleMasterTM
  • RuneQuestTM
  • ShadowrunTM
  • TalislantaTM
  • TorgTM
  • Tri TacTM Games
  • Warhammer FRPTM
  • World of DarknessTM Games
  • World of SynnibarrTM

"The Primal Order is the definitive work on religion in roleplaying... Most systems treat gods as monsters, and religion is just a source of spells, or a restriction on weaponry. Not any more."  —The Gamer

How much does this book depend on _The Primal Order_ core book? Is _Chessboards_ basically standalone? Is it incomprehensible without the core book? Somewhere in between? Where on a dependency scale of 0 to 10?

I owned Chessboards for more than a decade before I bought The Primal Order here as a POD. It is mostly useful for any game with alternate realities. The only exception are some rules related to the core book, but they are an appendix and not important to understanding the text as a whole.

And I still consider Chessboards to be the best book on the planes, even with so many other ones that have been published in the 25+ years since.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
