White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game is an easy to learn role-playing game in the style of the Original Edition from 1974 by Gygax and Arneson. It is based on Swords & Wizardy WhiteBox.

Unleash your imagination to dream of other worlds, where you roleplay heroic characters and go on adventures, just like in the days of old.

Slay a dragon!
Sometimes even the most reluctant adventurer will hear the call of the Wilderness and set out to slay a dragon, or at least steal its treasure!

Explore the unknown!
There is no limit to the lands you can explore and magic you can discover.

Fight on!
So grab your sword, mace or wand and travel beyond the borderlands and brace yourself to face great and terrible monsters. And remember, no matter what happens… Fight on!

I could not go back and edit my earlier evaluation. I don't know if this is by design, but when I opened the book to skim through page by page, the first page, with its table of contents, pulled right out of the book. I hadn't tried to "break in" the book, as some will. I just opened to the first page. And out it came. It did not rip out. There is no glue residue, so perhaps it was never glued in place. All other pages are glued tight. Something to keep in mind, should you be inclined to purchase this hardcover.

What you are getting: This hardcover is an improvement over others I've picked up from DriveThruRPG. These are not Smyth sewn and cloth reinforced! Print-on-demand publishers simply glue a softcover book inside hard covers. If you are lucky, the size of the hardcover matches the book block. In this case, the cover material is thicker or sturdier than most. The paper is satin and of much higher quality than that of the soft covers. There is minimal use of color, either red headings or dusty violet dividing up tables. The text and art is black, rather than the dark gray of typical DriveThruRPG printings. This looks much nicer than the soft covers, however . . . . It's not Smyth sewn. It will not lay flat. I don't know how well it will hold up over time. But it looks very nice. It feels nice in the hand. Get it if you love the game. If buying the core rules for the first time, get the soft cover, which is available in print from three different sources, all of which are print-on-demand. The only difference will be...See more

Is this B/X or BECMI ?

Neither. This is an update to Swords & Wizardry: WhiteBox, which itself is a revision of the nearly unplayable original version of Dungeon & Dragons. It is rules-light, allowing player progression to level ten without modification. Dwarfs, Elves, and Halflings aren't classes unto themselves, but have level limits to balance play in light of their special abilities. Optionally, Elves can multiclass as a fighter/mage limited to the eighth level of experience. You might want to pick up the inexpensive softcover from Amazon, Lulu, or DriveThruRPG before dropping more cash on this hardcover.

Item arrived today

Ok, I was lucky, 6 bucks on Amazon, no problem there.
Hardcover at 25 bucks though, certainly not.
It is 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches. Not quite 1/2 thick in softcover, likely half inch in hardcover.

It's a compact, well done product. Almost no margin at the top, little at the spine, a little at the bottom. Maybe that's the printer. Essentially speaking, no wasted page.
This is perhaps the best effort so far, at making a complete OSE OSR BECMI wannabe item yet if you want it taking as little of your table as possible.
Very readable, well organized what you expect from a publisher that is making a reiteration of a 50 year old game.

This is not OSE or BECMI, it is a simplified clone of Original D&D/Swords and Wizardry (without its extra classes).

Read slower next time :) I said OSE OSR BECMI wanna be. Emphasis on wannabe.

Some of us consider ALL of pre AD&D to be so little different you'd need to have no life and a rules lawyer mind to see the differences.

I stand my by observation, that at 6 bucks softcover on Amazon it's a good deal. 25 bucks hardcover is more of a total fan choice. Sometimes you want hardcover, sometimes not.
Barebones is a nice hardcover. Dungeon Questing is a nice hardcover. Heroes and Monsters is ok as a softcover. OSRIC is a massive softcover (might retroactively attach a piece of wood panel to the spine so it has a chance in hell of surviving).

hmm, do I need it? Not really.
Is it worth it? 25 bucks, unlikely.
Amazon just sold it to me a softcover for 6 bucks.

Where it sits on the timeline as measured against the other listing here at Drivthru is unknown to me. It might be an earlier printing.
Does that matter? Probably not. They are after all, BECMI type offerings.

There appears to me a lot of Whitebox titles listed, and I have no idea where they fit into the scheme of things.

This is an outstanding product. The system, the layout everything is so easy to find and use. I have bought this system for several friends and everyone who tries it loves it after spending time with it. Well done everyone involved

Is this updated 2.1 version of the rules announced on your Seattle Hills Games blog on April 22, 2020? While I understand it only corrects about 4 minuscule errata, I'd prefer the latest version of this great game. Thanks!

HI Charlie,

Does the hardcover version here have the dust jacket as well. All the ones I got from Lulu have dust jackets and I am not a fan of dustjackets?

Thanks

Ok thank you. You might want to get that fixed though. It says "Hardcover Color Book (Premium Heavyweight) (5.5" x 8.5")"

That part is actually correct. It does use the "hardcover Color Book (premium heavyweight)" option for print. Which is the best printing option that OBS offers. Better paper and offset printing, so the black ink is heavier and looks better. There is also some red text, here and there, in the book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
