City Builder Volume 7: Mercantile Places is the seventh offering in a series of 11 complementary books designed to help guide Game Masters through the process of creating exciting and compelling urban areas and places within them for their campaigns. It is a universal resource that is not specific to any particular game system and is intended to be compatible with the needs of almost any ancient, Dark Ages, Middle Ages, Renaissance, or fantasy milieu.

Its contents include:

  • An Introduction that describes the scope of the series and how to use the material in this volume;
  • Sections devoted to descriptions of Barbershops, Bathhouses, Hostels, Inns, Kitchens, Restaurants, Rooming Houses, and Taverns;
  • An appendix devoted to randomly determining the characteristics and numbers of inns and taverns in any particular community; and,
  • Two more more Adventure Hooks tying in with each described sort of place.

This download includes low-resolution screen-friendly and high-resolution printer-friendly versions of its cover surfaces, low- and high-resolution versions of its interior pages, and a text-only version of its interior pages. Its layout and design has also been slightly modified from that of previous volumes in response to comments from readers and in order to make it even more user-friendly.

Other volumes in this series include:

"After weeks of marching through wilderness and dank caverns, sloshing and struggling through muck, slime, and blood, and sleeping on flagstones and rock, most adventurers find it either necessary or enjoyable to seek the comforts of civilization." And [...]

This series continues to shine! City Builder Volume 7 helps fill in the gaps that are often times skimmed over by GMs when building their game worlds. Honestly, I must say that I hadn't thought of a few of these, but after reading through Barbershops, [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
