Description:

The Codex Martialis is a sourcebook of new combat options for your 3.5 OGL game, based on martial-arts manuals from the Renaissance era.  This is not another complex damage system or a spreadsheet of tables and formulae, but a fast-paced, cinematic system based directly on the real martial arts of Europe and Asia.

Emphasizing action, combat maneuvers and the deadly interplay of attack and defense with a minimum of complexity, the Codex is designed to make combat fluid, dynamic and intuitive, in order to bring a greater level of immersion and excitement by adding new tactical options to your gaming session.

The dynamic approach to combat in the Codex introduces a range of optional innovations from a new way to roll attack and defense dice to special Martial Feats that open up unique historically based combat techniques to your character.  New optional weapon stats make the choice of fighting kit relevant to the individual fighting style and personal strategy of each character rather than a mere cosmetic adornment.  Do you pick a staff for its defensive qualities and reach, a dagger for its close range lethality, or a longsword for its versatility in attack and defense?
The choice is yours, the possibilities are actually endless.  With this system, your fighter character needn’t be just another 'tank' like any other, nor does every Wizard need to cower in the background once their spells run out.

Special new Martial Feats allow you to integrate the unique qualities of each weapon into a personal fighting style which is based on actual martial techniques which balance against each other the way they did in real life.  The Martial Feats open up skills which allow higher level characters more advanced combat options without artificially limiting those of lower level players to use any strategy or innovation common sense would allow.

By tapping into the real-life fighting strategies written down by the ancients when people still lived by the sword, the Codex allows you to bring new life (and death) to the combat in your game, based around situational tactics and an interplay of maneuvers rather than overly complex damage models or requiring magic to make a fight interesting.

Written by martial arts practitioners with real-life fighting experience and based on five hundred year old combat manuals penned by the true Masters of the ancient martial arts such as Sigmund Ringeck, Joachim Meyer, Jud Lew, Miyamoto Musashi, Fiore Dei Liberi, and Achille Marozzo, the Codex Martialis is a window from your game into the lethal reality of combat in the ancient world.

This book has some very different, and in my view good ideas about how to handle combat in D&D. It outlines a system that takes combat from a mostly die-rolling exercise to one that requires more tactical decision making. The system is intended to be [...]

First of all, let me begin my review by saying that the Codex Martialis is simply one of the best-written gaming supplements I have ever read. It displays a high degree of professionalism in the effort. As an example of this let me quote from the work [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
