From the Journals of Victoria Hawkes:
There was the thunder-clap of a single cannon. ‘The game hasbegun anew, I said to Captain Rogers. He looked at me but said nothing. We knew what was about to happen. Slowly, we both turned, and looked out over the valley below us. Troops moved from the cover of the woods on our left. Not looking back at
me, he smiled, and said, Then let us roll the dice, and take our chances. With a series of swift, almost mechanical, motions, he tightened his chest straps, drew his pistol, and grabbed the control handle of his jump-pack. With an explosive burst of vapor he shot forward and up into the air. I was, I realized, all alone on the hillside; with the carbine in my hand and the battle laid out before me.
