Rugged Adventures

The Dungeons & Dragons 4E rest system is built for campaigns where the characters delve through a dungeon, one encounter-filled room at a time, taking short rests between each one, until they reach the final room-encounter, and complete the dungeon. Now, the system isn't broken, and it creates a certain type of experience, but if you're running a different type of campaign, you need a different type of rest system.

Rugged Adventures iconRugged Adventures presents a system where players feel worn down after almost every fight, until they rest for the night. One encounter per day (or fewer!) will be all you'll need to offer your players to make sure they're being challenged. And all of this is achievable with just a few small changes to the rest system, with little or no impact to the remaining mechanics of the game.

For use with Dungeons & Dragons 4E.

This product contains a level of complexity and novelty unlike anything found in the core game.

This supplement addresses what I believe to be the biggest fault in 4E, the seemingly limitless ability of characters to heal and snap right back into the next fight. While many may like this feature, I prefer a more gritty tone to my games. Thus Rugge [...]

I really like this supplement. I got it via the Haiti Relief promotional and otherwise would have missed this product. One of the issues I have with 4th Edition is the 'Super Hero" quality of the play. WIth so many healing surges, it is fairly com [...]

Some D&D 4e players and DMs feel that certain aspects of the healing rules reduce the PCs' risk of death to an almost negligible degree. In particular, the unlimited use of healing surges during short rests and the full recovery offered by extended [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
