Complete naval miniatures rules for the age of sail covering the years 1755 to 1815. Also included are cut-apart ship counters for those who do not wish to use detailed naval miniatures.

HEART OF OAK covers all aspects of naval combat and tactics in depth and even details how the sailing ships actually worked with their enviroment. The effects of wind direction and strength of the wind are carefully explained to make for a more detailed and accurate simulation. Crews must deal with sail handling to maneuver in combat.

Perhaps the best way to judge the realism in any simulation is to compare the tactics successfully in a game with those used historically. Players will note the same evolution in combat tactics occuring amongst their foes as was seen on the oceans of the world in the 18th and early 19th century. Line of Battle will be understood and will be introduced and finally true Nelsonian tactics will develop to break battle lines. While the age of fighting sail ended historically before the real advent of steam powered ships, this need not be the case for players as peaceful interludes will not interrupt the evolution of combat tactics to go beyond even those of Nelson.

Here, complete in one volume, is all you need to understand and enter this exciting area of miniatures simulation. The workings of the ships and crews are fully explained. Rules cover crews, crew quality, weather, ship classifications, handling characteristics, etc. Sample ship classes for all major powers in the age of sail are included to assist players to easily set up scenarios. Campaign and tournament rules are also included.

The rules themselves are fantastic, and the sailing system is the best I've seen. But the reason I rate this product as 1/5 stars is because this PDF book is a scanned copy, and the scan quality is very bad. The text is very blurry, and I strongly [...]

Definitely worth it for the sailing system alone, but dated otherwise, combat needs improving. [...]

This is an excellebnt set of rules. Its one of the best for single ship combat or when each player controls a single ship (two max). You will not be able to run Trafalgar or other major battles without a lot of players, but small actions are a joy. The [...]

It looks like a very meaty ruleset for its slim 50 or so pages, chock full of nautical crunch to satisfy the barnacle-clad old salt in you. In terms of complexity it may rank alongside Birnie's "Action Under Sail". If you're looking for a simple beer-n-pr [...]

Scan of original 1978 rules. Invaluable resource for anyone interested in sailing, Age of Sail naval history, or intermediate wargamers. Sailing diagrams are very useful. Ship data tables are very extensive. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
